Short summary – read this first

Karizzel is planning a trip from Zurich to visit both Stein am Rhein and the Rhine Falls and is looking for route recommendations. They will be traveling in June, which is a great time for the falls but may present challenges in high-altitude areas due to lingering snow.

Key takeaways:
  • Visit both Stein am Rhein and the Rhine Falls in one day; plan your route carefully to maximize time.
  • Check the weather in early June, particularly at high altitudes, as some areas may still be snow-bound.

    Hi Karizzel –

Yes it is possible to vist Stein am Rhein and the Rhine Falls in one day from Zürich.

What time of year do you plan to go? The Falls vary somewhat in their intensity in rainy or in drier periods of the year, and after snow melt in the Spring.

When we visited Stein am Rhein many years ago, we walked up the hill through the vineyards and the forest to the castle and had a nice lunch at the restaurant overlooking the valley and the countryside. It is about a 200 meter altitude change from the village. On a clear day some of the the mountains are nicely visible.

    Hi Karizzel –

That should be a good time to visit the falls.

Please not that early June is still the last part of Winter at high altitudes. For example, the high mountain pass roads may not open until as late as mid June. My hotel planned for Wengen does not open for the season until June 3. High trails may still be blocked y snow in early June. So, if you plan to go to high altitude regions, the time that you go in June can be important.

Since the snow melt for the majority of the snow feeding the Rhine is nearinng the end of the maximum flow, and the falls will still be feeling the effect.

The difference betwen early June and late June at hig altitudes is quite significant.

At lower altitudes, such as near Lake Constance (the Bodensee) or the major cities, the weather is much warmer, and early May is already Spring.
