Stoos Ridge Hike or is there a similar hike in Wengen?

Short summary – read this first

Pat Butler is planning a hiking trip with six women in July, based in Wengen. They want to know if the Stoos Ridge hike is worth the travel and are looking for recommended routes. They also seek alternatives closer to Wengen.

Key takeaways:
  • The Stoos Ridge hike can be quite time-consuming, taking about four-and-a-half hours with five train changes, so consider closer hikes.
  • The Schynige Platte Ridge Trail is a great alternative, taking just 2-2.5 hours and offering scenic views.
  • The Eiger Trail and the Panaramag loop hike on Schynige Platte are both easy to moderate options, each taking around 2.5 hours.
  • Don't forget to check out the Mountain View hike from Grutschalp to Murren; it's also scenic and within a similar timeframe.

I am coming with six women in July. We will be based in Wengen. We are all fit and active hikers. Is the Stoos Ridge hike worth the time it would take us to get there? If so, what route do you recommend we take to get there. Is there another hike closer to Wengen area that would be comparable?

    Kindly,
    Pat Butler

    Hello Pat

    Welcome to MySwissAlps

I am the last person you should consult about hiking opportunities; my strength is public transport schedules.  I have just entered a Wengen to Stoos journey into the Swiss electronic timetable (https://www.myswissalps.com/travel/public-transport/timetable/).  It would take four-and-a-half-hours with five changes!

    KInd regards

    Roger

    Hi Pat,

If Stoos is too far for a day trip, consider doing the Schynige Platte Ridge Trail instead. It’s closer to Wengen. Information on how to get to Schynige Platte is available here: https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/schynige-platte/

Another option is the ridge trail on Brienzer Rothorn (https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/brienzer-rothorn/).

    Regards,
    Anna

    Hi Pat
Anna’s suggestion of the Panaramag loop hike on Schynige Platte is a good one. It will take about 2-2.5 hrs and is relatively flat and easy. You might also consider the Eiger Trail from Eigergletcher to Alpiglen (2.5 hrs). Also a very scenic hike. My personal favorite is First to Bussalp via Hireleni route (2.5-3 hrs). Last, the Mountain View hike from Grutschalp to Murren takes about 2.5- 3 hrs and is very scenic hike (https://www.myswissalps.com/blog/hike-grutschalp-murren/). Note this trail begins on the right side of the Panaramag trail just after leaving  Grutschalp.
These are all very scenic, easy to moderate hikes that are relatively close to Wengen.
