Storing luggage, Wengen, Lucerne, Pilatus

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named Sharpl has a trip planned for June, traveling from city to city in Switzerland. They are looking for the best way to handle their luggage while exploring, wondering if they should store it at hotels or at the train stations instead. Specifically, they are considering what to do on June 10th while going from Wengen to Lucerne and then heading to Mt. Pilatus.

Key takeaways:
  • You can store your luggage at train stations, which may be more practical than hotel storage on travel days.
  • Check the SBB website to confirm luggage storage availability at each station before you go.
  • Using a luggage forwarding service can make your travels more comfortable by reducing the hassle of handling bags yourself.

I have a wonderful trip planned for June. There are several days where we travel from one city to the next and our hotel will not be available for check in yet. I had thought I would just travel there and ask each hotel to store our luggage before we board the train yet again to head for our excursions. Would it make more sense to just skip hotel luggage storage and store at the train station instead? For example, travel from Wengen to Lucerne on Mon. June 10th and then on to Mt. Pilatus that day. Should I just proceed instead from Wengen to Mt. Pilatus with our luggage?

    Hi Sharpl,

That is down to personal preference and convenience… You can store luggage at the train station as well at a cost or even forward it on. To read more about the solutions, you can visit this link http://www.myswissalps.com/tr ain/practical/luggage

    Hi Sharpl –

On the page that Maria Linked, there are some further links to the SBB main page. If you follow the link for stations and services, you will be able to search for stations by name.

For each station, you can scroll down to sections for Services ( luggage offices) or Equipment (lockers). If no lockers are listed, there are none.

Pilatus -I did not check for the valley station at Kriens or the cograil base station at Alpnachstad, but, I’d be surprised if they have luggage storage. As noted, many smaller stations don’t have one or both of those capabilities. You can easily check to see if I will actually be surprised. 😉

It is rare that a hotel will not hold luggage for you if you have a reservation and come in before the room is ready.

Luzern has a left luggage office and also a fair number of lockers at two places on the main platform.

See attached map. I got it from the SBB website.

There are some lockers at the end of track 15 and a larger set along platform #3 near track #2

The left luggage office is on the balcony, at the end above track #14.

Slowpoke, it is a great thing you pointed out that many smaller stations don’t have luggage offices or lockers. I am now completely bumfuzzled. Can you help clear my muddled mind on these moves? 1. Our first move will be from Zermatt to Montreux. I was trying to determine if we could go directly to Glacier 3000 with our luggage, but I don’t see any luggage service at Col-du-Pillon. 2. Second move would be from Montreux to Wengen. Hoping to go to Jungfrauouch directly, but at Kleine Scheidegg it says no info on lockers, but it does say luggage and has hours???? So this one is good? 3. Third move is Wengen to Pilatus, which appears that we would store at Lucerne before boarding cable cars??? Thank you for clearing up my confusion.

Without checking the links, I am quite sure that #2, and # 3 are correct.

    Your number 1 confuses me.

Are you returning to Montreux after G3000?

If so, use Montreux for luggage. If not, I’m bumfuzzled.

Ha, yes, two nights in Montreux. I just get confused as to whether I am wasting time by going to the hotel to store luggage and if I should go directly to Glacier 3000 and store there if possible. I’m just trying to make good use of our time. Thanks so much for the advice and clearing out some of the “bumfuzzle”.

Trains from LB or GW up to KS have some room for luggage but are small and cramped. You did not give your dates in June, so I cannot forecast tourist density.

Forgot your route, but, if you can afford the time to drop luggage at LB, Wengen, or GW, it would make your trip more comfortable.

    Hello Sharpl,

Hope to have read the existing thread correctly.

Maybe the easiest way to prevent you from having to bother with all of the luggage storing on days when you move AND want to explore destinations, why not consider the luggage service between stations, that you can find at the bottom in Marias first link?!

Just an input to maybe make things more comfortable.

    Best,
    Steph
