Validity of Swiss Travel Pass for 3 or 4 days for late night travel?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named Cakdut is planning to buy a 3-day Swiss Travel Pass and is confused about its validity at the very end of the ticket period. They want to know if they can board a train just before their pass expires at 05:00 on July 26th. It turns out they can only use the pass for a few minutes before it ends, which won’t be enough for a proper journey.

Key takeaways:
  • You cannot board a train at 04:56 if your Swiss Travel Pass expires at 05:00, as you will only have four minutes of travel time.
  • If ticket inspectors check your pass after it expires, you will face a penalty for traveling without a valid ticket.
  • Consider using the Swiss Travel Pass earlier in the day to avoid complications right before expiration.

    In practical reality No!

Your 3-day STP will be valid only for the first four minutes of your journey! But in that time you will not make it to the next station stop!  The reason for the extra five hours validity on top of the basic three days is to cater for people travelling significant distances just after midnight!

    Hi Cakdut,

Roger is correct, if your Swiss Travel Pass expires at 05:00 on the 26th July.  Taking transportation at 04:56 would only allow 4 minutes of travel.  If an ticket inspector checked your pass 05:01, you would be traveling without a valid ticket or rail pass, so would unfortunately receive a penalty/fine.
