Grindelwald to Milan with Swiss Travel Pass – need to change train?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning to travel from Grindelwald to Milan, with a stop in Domodossola. They’re unsure if they need to change trains at Domodossola or if their train from Spiez will take them straight to Milan. They are seeking clarification on train connections and ticket purchases.

Key takeaways:
  • The Swiss Travel Pass covers the train from Spiez to Domodossola, so you'll only need to buy a separate ticket from Domodossola to Milan.
  • It's best to purchase your tickets directly from the Trenitalia website to avoid issues with other booking sites.
  • To ensure you keep your seat when changing trains, book your Domodossola to Milan ticket and the corresponding seat on the Spiez to Domodossola leg in advance.

    Hi all,

I will be travelling to Milan from Grindelwald after exploring Switzerland. I understand that with a Swiss Travel Pass, I can reach Domodossola and then get a ticket from there to Milan Centrale. However, i am not sure if the train i am taking from Spiez to Domodossola is the same train as the one from Domodossola to Milan, or do i need to alight and change train? I think from Spiez there is train EC51/59 to Milan, but i could not find the tickets for the same train from Domodossola to Milan on Omio (The train was TRENORD 2419/2443).

    Any advice?

    Thank you!

Ronnieg8 – am I right that you planning journey between 9th of June and 8th of September? In this period train no 51 is going to Domodossola only. More – don’t using any travel agent and buy tickets / reservations directly on the Trenitalia website: https://www.trenitalia.com/en.html

And it is a reason why you should ignore apps/websites like Omio, Thetrainline, etc. – Trenitalia website sell tickets for mid-May for above direct EC trains to Milan without any problems, both from Domodossola and Spiez.

I see, so am i right to say that the STP covers the EC train up til Domodossola, and i just need a ticket from domodossola to Milan? Without having the alight the train?

Ronnie98 – yes. And I suggest to booking parallelly ticket for Domodossola-Milan section (which include seat number too) and the same seat on section Spiez-Domodossola. It allow to avoid seat change at Domodossola station if your seat on section Spiez-Domodossola will be occupied (train starts in Basel).
