Hi everyone,

I am planning my itinerary for September and I intend to purchase the half fare card + Top of Europe pass, but haven’t done it yet.

I have been monitoring point to point tickets for specific trips outside the “top or Europe pass” area of validity and I see there are super saver fares available if I buy in advance.

My questions are:

1. can I buy super saver tickets at half fare in advance, considering I will have a half fare card later when I´m there, or do I need to buy the HFC online first and then purchase super saver tickets?

2. how far in advance are super saver tickets available, is it 30 or 60 days?

Welcome to MySwissAlps.

1. Yes, without the Swiss Half Fare Card (https://www.myswissalps.com/swisshalffarecard) you can still buy a Supersaver ticket. Just make sure you have the Swiss Half Fare Card with you along with the ticket when you travel, or you’ll risk getting fined for travelling with the wrong or invalid ticket.

2. The Supersaver tickets can be purchased up to 60 days in advance.

With Supersaver tickets just be aware that if your plans change you are stuck with them.

Saver day pass, or a point to point half fare ticket purchased closer to your date of travel are more expensive but leave you with more flexibility

Buy the half fare card first. Ensure it’s linked to your sbb app. There were super saver tickets up to 24h prior to rides! Granted the discounts werent insane in those cases (1-5$ off pending how far you’re going)

you can tell if super saver prices are available in the app if there’s a black square with a “%” in it. Additionally make sure you click all the way through to the ticket options to see the the actual quoted prices.

Do note that we were terrified of the super saver being for THAT SPECIFIC ROUTE AT THAT TIME. however we found they were very reasonable. Ex: We missed our connection bc our first train was delayed (which is rare) and we freaked out went to the info desk and they fixed us up with new tickets, but essentially were like your fine just get on a bus going to your destination. We still somehow got on the wrong bus and the attendant was beyond nice to us and helped us get to our destination.

Thanks for your input! Good to hear the Swiss Half Fare Card and the SBB app worked out well for you. Yes, Supersaver tickets are valid for specific trains and departure times only (https://www.myswissalps.com/traintickets/switzerland). Great that the railway staff helped you out with new tickets.

Just to avoid any misunderstandings for other readers: there’s no need to get the Swiss Half Fare Card first and/or to link it to the SBB app. Travelers can just buy discounted tickets from the SBB app, ticketing machines or other websites (https://www.myswissalps.com/traintickets/switzerlandhalffare) without creating an account at the SBB website. As long as one has both the Swiss Half Fare Card and the discounted ticket when asked for during traveling, it’s all fine.
