Bernina Express reservations & lunch in Tirano?

Short summary – read this first

Kim is planning a week-long trip to Klosters with two friends and considering buying a Swiss Flex Pass to ride first class. They want to take a day trip from Chur to Tirano and are looking for advice on reserving seats for the Bernina Express, picking up the pass at the airport, and lunch options in Tirano.

Key takeaways:
  • You can reserve seats for the Bernina Express without having purchased the Swiss Travel Pass yet.
  • To enjoy first-class travel, consider upgrading if you have a second-class pass.
  • El Trigo in Tirano offers delicious fresh pasta and pizza, perfect for a quick lunch, but be aware it closes at lunchtime.
  • You can buy the Swiss Flex Pass at Zurich Airport's SBB station upon arrival.

I am about to buy a Swiss Flex pass for myself and 2 friends. They want to ride first class. We are in Klosters for 1 week. We would like to ride the train from Chur to Tirano and back in a day trip. Should we buy the Flex pass and then reserve seats for the Bernina Express in that order? I see that we can pick up the pass at the airport on our arrival. Where do you go for that? Any recommendations for a lunch spot in Tirano ? We will only be there a short time. thanks, Kim

Hello Treblemakerm and Welcome to MySwissAlps,

You can make reservations without having already bought the Swiss Travel Pass. See http://www.rhb.ch/en/panorami c-trains/bernina-express#info. You could go one way on regular trains (no reservation neede) and one way on BEX.

You can buy a Class upgrade to 1st Class if you have a 2nd Class Pass.

You can buy the Pass before you arrive in Switzerland but the Flex Pass must be posted to you – there is no on-line delivery option as for the normal STP. See http://www.myswissalps.com/sw isstravelpassflex/pric e. Otherwise you can buy at SBB station at Zurich Airport (you may have to queue).

Great cafe on the station square. Lovely food and rapid service.

There are several tempting cafés / restaurants close to the station, with outside tables. If you fancy a picnic of fresh pasta or pizza, there’s an amazing fresh pasta / pizza shop, El Trigo, on the main street, Viale Italia, about four minutes’ walk from Tirano station. A huge slab of freshly baked Margherita for 1.50 euros – they have too an amazing array of fresh pasta dishes that they’ll heat up for you in a foil tray, for maybe 2.50 or 3.00 a good portion. The pasta melanzane (aubergine) was so good! Slight warning – like many shops, it closes at lunchtime!

The Italian Railway Station adjacent to the Bernina Station has a lovely ice cream stall outside!
