I want to thank the Forum for all the feedback I’ve been given from my various posts. We depart soon, so I wanted to present our “final” (although we all know it is never really final) itinerary for comments and suggestions. We’ll be traveling elsewhere in Europe first, so these stops are from mid-May onward…

    5 Nights in Ermatingen

    1. Direct boat to Reichenau, Germany
    2. Train to Romanshorn and ferry to Friedrichshafen, Germany for the Zeppelin museum
    3. Stein am Rhein and Diessenhofen, including Klostermuseum St. Georgen
    4. St. Gallen, primarily for the Abbey and Library (of course!), but also Old Town and Schützengarten Brewery

5 Nights in Chur (I know Chur doesn’t excite everyone, but it works well as a hub for our goals. Also, Alien is one of my favorite movies, so we WILL be visiting the Giger Bar!!) 🙂

    1. St. Martin in Zillis
    2. Train to Arosa. Hopefully the Arosa to Langwies via Litzirüti hike will be possible after the snowmelt. Otherwise, village exploration along train route
    3. Reformierte Kirche Waltensburg + Rhine Gorge Trail, probably between Trin and Reichenau
    4. St. Moritz

    3 Nights Zuoz

    1. Saint John Abbey, Müstair
    2. Train to Poschiavo

1 Night Zurich (mostly just a relocation stop, but look forward to exploring the Swiss National Museum)

    4 Nights Murten/Morat

    1. Payerne Priory and the Avenches Roman amphitheater
    2. Ambitious day to try and take in both Lausanne and the Romainmôtier Heritage Trail
    3. Neuchâtel (Musée d’Art et d’Histoire and the collegiate church ) plus an additional excursion to the Maison de l’Absinthe in Môtiers

All day stopover in Bern, and then 1 (final) night in Basel

    1. In addition to Bern’s Old Town, definitely want to enjoy the Altes Tramdepot

So, that’s it. Looking forward to any comments, thoughts, suggestions, warnings, etc. And, as always, thank you!

    Hi Dan,

Congratulations on a very interesting itinerary! I think is well put together. You’ll get to explore lots of Switzerland’s hidden gems. Nothing wrong with Chur either, it’s a good base for the day trips you’ve planned. Great that you’ve included a hike in the Rhine gorge: it’s a splendid piece of nature.

I know you already have more than a enough plans as it is, but a few ideas spring to my mind for your days in Zuoz:

    • a hike in Val Sausana from Cinuos-chel-Brail
    • a hike in Val Sinestra, from Vnà to the Zuort restaurant
    • visits to the pretty villages Ftan and/or Guarda

Will you be using public transport only/mostly? And if so, have you been considering a rail pass?

You’d have to calculate to find out what’s the cheapest option. Here’s how to: https://www.myswissalps.com/train/ticketspasses/practical/chooserailpass.

Thanks Annika. Your suggestions from Zuoz look great. Especially if we get nice weather I think we can squeeze something else in! 🙂 And yes, we decided on the 15-day Swiss Travel Pass, both for maximum flexibility as well as the ease of just “turning our brains off.” It leaves a couple days outside of the 15-day spread, which we’ve priced out and are fine purchasing a la carte.
