Swiss restaurant reservations necessary in Sept?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a trip to Lucerne, Wengen, Montreux, Zermatt, St. Moritz, and Zurich in early September. They want to know if they need to make restaurant reservations or if crowds will be light enough to just walk in. It's helpful to get insights about dining in these popular spots.

Key takeaways:
  • Make restaurant reservations for popular places, especially in Zermatt, as it can get crowded.
  • In smaller towns like St. Moritz, you might find it less crowded and easier to get a table without a reservation.
  • Check if specific restaurants allow reservations in advance, as some may be fully booked during peak times.

We are going to be in Lucerne, Wengen, Montreux, Zermatt, St. Moritz and Zurich in early September and I was wondering if we would need to make reservations at restaurants during this time? Or, are the crowds light enough that reservations would not be necessary? Thanks for any help you can give.

    Hello Dkoegl309,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

If you have specific restaurants in mind that you were keen to dine at in Lucerne, Wengen, Montreux, Zermatt, St.Moritz and Zurich. I would suggest you make reservations. It could be for some restaurants, it’s too early to secure a reservation but for others they may take your reservation.

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda

    Hi Dkoegl309,

I think Zermatt may be the only place you may be concerned about reserves. It can be crowded at any time of year, and it’s smaller in size than Zurich and Montreux. You should have no probpem at all in St Moritz. I was there in September (2018), and being as it was just after the tourist season, And it was a Sunday, it was like a ghost town. Other than in a few shops I stopped in, I don’t think I saw 5 people in total. I was in all the places you are going to, and didn’t have a problem at all. Across from the Zurich train station is a whole section of shops, cafes, restaurants, etc, along the cobblestone and winding streets. You should have no problem at all finding a place to eat. Have a great trip.

    Regards,

    Danielsan
