    Hi,

I have tried unsuccessfully to find info on this by searching the forum – apologies if I have done something wrong.

We intend visiting Zurich in a couple of weeks and will probably buy an 8 day Swiss Travel Pass – I understand that this includes local bus and tram travel? Do you just get on the bus or tram, with the pass and your passport in your pocket in case an inspector comes onto the bus/tram and asks to see them?

Yes, that’s how it works. Although the whole time we were in Switzerland, we rode trains, buses and trams and never had anyone check our passes except on the trains.

That is because of the general honesty of most residents of Switzerland.

However that is also the reason why, if a check does take place, a traveller without a ticket is not given any leeway as the system is quite clear, if you don’t have a ticket you are breaking the law.

I have seen checks and consequences on my extensive travels throughout Switzerland over time, including:

    • plain clothes inspectors, deliberately dressed-down (at first I thought it was a group of students), carry out check on Geneva trams.
    • railway police corralling an IC5 train at Biel/Bienne at unceremoniously marching away a ticketless traveller.

Oh, absolutely. That’s why we were always prepared with our passes. I was just stating our experiences. 👍

    Hi Dave689,

That’s right. When you have the Swiss Travel Pass, you can simply get on any train, bus or boat without having to buy a ticket in advance. Ticket inspections are usually carried onboard randomly. All you have to do is present your STP. Some inspectors may request for your ID too just for verification.
