Swiss Travel Pass, Bernina seat – refund policies

Short summary – read this first

Samir is planning a 15-day trip to Switzerland with 3 adults and a child and is concerned about booking the Swiss Travel Pass due to potential visa issues. He is looking for information on refund policies for both the Swiss Travel Pass and reservations for the Bernina Express.

Key takeaways:
  • The Swiss Travel Pass is refundable if canceled a few days before the travel date, so check individual seller policies for exact rules.
  • Bernina Express reservations are typically non-refundable, but some exceptions exist, like in cases of illness.
  • Some sites offer flexible cancellation options, allowing you to cancel free of charge until shortly before the trip.

    Team

Need urgent support for 2 specific questions.

Initially I thought to book the 15 days STP once we get the VISA but I can see Bernina Express reservation is filling fast.

    1. If we’ll book 3 Adults +1 child (14 yrs) for 15 days STP and if Visa get rejected whether we can get full refund?

    2. With STP, do we know whether Bernina Reservation also would be refundable.

This site is a real friend of mine to plan everything – once again I need your help before I take the big decision.

    Regards, Samir

    Hi Samir,

Yes, the Swiss Travel Pass is refundable if cancelled before the specified travel date (1 – 4 days prior usually). Please find purchase options and further details here: http://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpass/price. Do read the terms of the website you buy from as different resellers have different refund policies.

Seat reservations on the Bernina Express once confirmed is generally non-refundable. But in exceptional cases such as illness you can get some reimbursement.

Hope you’ll get your visa in time.

    Regards,

    Anna

    Dear Anna

Thank you so much for your best wishes! Really from the day one you and entire team guided in such a way that I find this group is my best buddy for Switzerland trip which I actually echoed on different social media page and friends.

About STP cancellation policy, actually before I post this, I researched a lot about the link already however I failed to see any clause where it has been written clearly about refund. Yes a few site talked about 60 CHF penalty towards 3-4 days before cancellation. Hence looking for the refund clause..

Hence, am worried as I wrote several times that in 2020 I lost a significant amount of money hence taking extra precautions this time.

    Regards, Samir

    Hi Samir,

Good to hear that, we’re glad to help!

Most if not all sites listed at http://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpass/price have pretty good refund policies. For example, at https://www.getyourguide.com/central-switzerland-l82/swiss-travel-pass-unlimited-travel-on-train-bus-boat-t403218/, you can reserve now and pay later, or cancel free of charge until 24 hours before the trip. The official SBB shop at https://shop.switzerlandtravelcentre.com/#/en/product/swissPass offers a CHF 12.50 policy on the whole order that allows you to cancel without further costs, no questions asked.

Please do check the policies before you decide though.

Wow! I can see 2nd one is relatively cheaper but I fail to see the refund clause here which you wrote only 12.50 CHf for entire order of 4 (which is very reasonable). Hence I dropped an email.

Meanwhile, if you have found that note please do post here, accordingly I will immediately book the same.

Of course the first one is self-explanatory as it has clearly written.

    Thanks once again.

    Regards, Samir

    Hi Samir,

Once you’ve selected your Swiss Travel Pass and provide your email and details, you will be offered the Flex Cancellation Option. This is right before completing the payment.

I have included a couple of screenshots below.

    Hi Samir,

Regarding Bernina express refund. If your VISA get’s cancelled then most likely you will get full refund. In all other cases, they generally issue refund after deducting CHF 10 service charge. You can contact them directly for more clarification using below form. They respond within couple of days

    Thanks
