Swiss Travel Pass Flex or the consecutive pass?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a 17-day trip to Switzerland from early to late April and is unsure whether to buy a Flexible 15-day Pass or a Consecutive 15-day Pass. They want to know if there are any disadvantages to the Flexible Pass since both options have similar prices.

Key takeaways:
  • Consider your travel itinerary carefully; if you plan to have days without travel, the Consecutive Pass may be more cost-effective.
  • With the Swiss Travel Pass Flex, remember that you need to activate it for each travel day; this could be less convenient if your plans change.
  • Both passes allow free entry to over 500 museums, so consider how many you may want to visit during your trip.

You pay a premium for the flexibility of the Flex version but with the 15-day Pass it is only CHF50 and that may be worth it.

With the consecutive Pass you just use it. With the Flex you need to activate it for each of the 15 travel days you select. See http://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpassflex.

It all depends on your itinerary. If you have little or no travel on one or two days at either end of your trip then a continuous pass may work for you.

    Hi Punit shah01,

I believe you have already used the spreadsheet (http://www.myswissalps.com/train/ticketspasses/practical/chooserailpass) to calculate all of your travel costs, right? It depends on your travel itinerary, which one is better for you. If you have no travel days (no cable cars, no trains, boats etc) in the middle of your itinerary, then the Swiss Travel Pass Flex might be better for you. (Note, that you can also visit over 500 museums for free with the Swiss Travel Pass and the Swiss Travel Pass Flex: http://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpass/details).

You can read about how to use the Swiss Travel Pass Flex at http://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpassflex/howtouse and similar info about the Swiss Travel Pass can be found at http://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpass/howtouse. You’ll also find the list of recommended retailers under the price label: http://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpass/price and http://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpass/price.

Just to add to Ildiko’s excellent advice, don’t fall into the trap of thinking you can use the Flex pass for anything at all (eg museum entry) on a non-travel day. You can’t. You would need to activate it and use up a travel day even if all you wanted to do was visit a museum.
