Swiss Travel Pass for trip from Milan to Zurich

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is heading from Milan to Zurich in mid-June and wants to confirm if they can board the train using their tickets from Milan to Chiasso and then show their Swiss Travel Pass for the rest of the journey to Zurich. They have already purchased the Swiss Travel Pass to start on the day of their trip and seek clarity on the ticketing process.

Key takeaways:
  • You only need tickets from Milan to Chiasso, as the Swiss Travel Pass covers the journey from Chiasso to Zurich.
  • The Swiss Travel Pass is valid on international trains as they enter Switzerland, so you can use it for your trip if it's valid on that day.

Hello, we are traveling from Milan to Zurich in mid-June. We have bought STPs that will start on the day we make this trip. Can we get on the train to Zurich with tickets from Milan to Chiasso and then show the conductor our STPs for the rest of the journey? It looks that way from what I read on the site but I would like to confirm.

Many thanks in advance for your help!

    Hi DT99,

That’s correct. The Swiss Travel Pass is valid for the section from Chiasso to Zurich so there’s no need to purchase additional tickets. You just need tickets from Milan to Chiasso. For information about tickets from Italy to Switzerland, see here: http://www.myswissalps.com/traintickets/italy

    Enjoy your trip!

    Yes

You can be on board an international train as it enters Switzerland and use your Swiss Travel Pas if it is valid for that day. In all cases you can buy a ‘non Swiss’ ticket up to the Swiss border station

This applies at all locations where main international trains cross into Switzerland and immediately assume the same status as internal Swiss trains, ie:

    Chiasso (Milano – Zurich/Basel EC)

Domodossola (Milano – Geneve / Basel EC)

    Vallorbe (Paris – Lausanne TGV)

Basel SBB (eg Berlin- Interlaken ICE, Paris – Zurich TGV)

    St Margrethen (Munchen – Zurich)

    Buchs SG (Innsbruck – Zurich)

    Schaffhausen (Stuttgart – Zurich IC)
