Swiss Travel Pass: tickets for free mountain rides

Short summary – read this first

Anshu66 is planning a trip in Switzerland and has questions about using their Swiss Travel Pass for accessing free mountain areas like Rigi and Stoos. They want to know if they need to queue at ticket counters or can directly access the funiculars with just their pass to save time.

Key takeaways:
  • You can directly board the mountain railways to Rigi with your Swiss Travel Pass; just show your pass when asked.
  • For Stoos, you need a free ticket for the turnstile, which can be obtained online or at the ticket office; show your Swiss Travel Pass when you get it.
  • You can also access Stanserhorn directly with your Swiss Travel Pass, and you may want to consider a boarding pass online for busy days.

    Hi.

I have purchased a Swiss travel pass and have noted that there are a couple of free mountains includied in it like rogi and stood.

just need clarity on whether I need to wait in queue at the ticket counter to collect the free access tickets or can I just directly access the the firniculars etc by showing the STP because that way it would save a load of time

    thanks

    Hi anshu66,

This will depend. Some will need an access card and you can only obtain these at a ticket office.

    In your two examples:

    1. To reach Rigi, with the Swiss Travel Pass you don’t need to order additional tickets, you can simply board the mountain railways to Rigi and if asked, just show your pass (with identification).

    2. For your visit to Stoos, with the Swiss Travel Pass, you would need a ticket to get through the turnstile. You can buy the ticket on their online shop and indicate Swiss Travel Pass or General Abonnement – the price would be zero and thereon print it out. Of course, there is the option to buy your ticket at the funicular ticket office too.

    Hello again,

With Stanserhorn, you won’t need a “ticket” from the counter with your Swiss Travel Pass. You can go directly to the funicular. If it’s busy, you may need to wait or you may wish to buy a boarding pass for a preferred time, you can do this online. If you scroll to “More information” in the below link, you can research the boarding pass.

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda
