Buying cross-border tickets with Swiss Travel Pass

Short summary – read this first

Bill is gearing up for a 15-day trip starting on July 4th to Switzerland, planning to visit Lake Como and Lake Konstanz. He's unclear about how to book train travel outside of Switzerland with his Swiss Travel Pass and wants to avoid buying additional tickets on the go.

Key takeaways:
  • Use the Swiss Travel Pass for unlimited travel within Switzerland without extra tickets, except for mountain transport like cable cars.
  • For trips outside Switzerland, you only need to buy a ticket from the Swiss border to your destination.
  • You can purchase cross-border tickets on the same day at any SBB station or online, with no need to exit the train if you have a valid ticket.

I’ve read the Swiss Travel Pass information section but was unsure about how to book travel, either on the app or website, when my travel takes me outside of Switzerland?

We purchased the 15-day pass for our visit starting this Thursday, July 4th.

We’re looking at trips to Lake Como and Lake Konstanz and maybe a few more.  My friends with the resident Swiss Pass say the ticket cost should be just the outside-Switzerland leg.  But when I look at trip costs on the SBB app or website, the cost seems to be for the full fare.

Even trips within Switzerland, like Zurich to Basel, are showing a cost for travel.

I can see my Swiss Travel Pass in both the app and on the website.

What am I doing wrong? I’d like to just get on the train and not have to worry about buying a ticket at the station each time I plan on a trip across a border.

    Thanks,
    Bill

    Hi Bill,

The Swiss Travel Pass provides free unlimited travelling on Swiss public transport. There’s no need to purchase additional tickets unless you are travelling on mountain transportation such as cable cars and gondolas (which you get up to 50% discounts). Just show the Swiss Travel Pass and your ID when the ticket inspector demands them. You simply use the SBB Mobile App to check public transport schedules.

Please find more information about how to use the Swiss Travel Pass here: https://www.myswissalps.com/travel-ticket/swiss-travel-pass/ (scroll down to How does the Swiss Travel Pass work)

If you are travelling cross border, you only need to purchase a ticket from the Swiss border to your destination. For instance if you are travelling to Como, you would need a ticket from Chiasso (the Swiss border town) to Como.

The SBB runs train services to Konstanz, so the Swiss Travel Pass will cover your journey up to the Konstanz SBB station.

    Hope this helps.

    Regards,

    Anna

    Thanks Anna!

I wasn’t sure if the Swiss Travel Pass covered the last (short) portion of the trip into Germany.

I won’t need it for this Konstanz trip, but still am not sure how to actually buy the ticket for the portion of a trip outside of Switzerland?  I read the other material but didn’t see that noted. If we are going to Como, do we need to exit the train at Chiasso and buy an additional ticket?  It looks like that route goes onto Como…is there time to exit, buy a new ticket and reboard?

    Sorry for the newbie questions!

    Best Regards, Bill

    Hi Bill,

For the journey to Como, you only need a ticket from Chiasso to Como San Giovanni. You can purchase this ticket on the day or in advance, directly from any SBB station or online: https://www.myswissalps.com/travel-guide/italy-switzerland/

There is no need to exit the train at Chiasso if you have a valid ticket.

Let us know if you need further clarification.

    Anna
