Swiss Travel Pass validity in Tirano?
Suriaia73 is planning to ride the Bernina Express from Tirano to St Moritz and wants to know if they can use their Swiss Travel Pass (STP) for discounted tickets. They received confirmation that the STP covers this route and were advised on the need for seat reservations when taking the Bernina Express.
The Swiss Travel Pass is valid for travel from Tirano to St Moritz on the Bernina Railway, but seat reservations are required for the Bernina Express. If you choose regular trains instead, no extra charges will apply if you have a valid STP. Use the SBB Mobile app for checking timetables and purchasing tickets conveniently.

Hi there,
I plan to take Bernina Express ride from Tirano to St Moritz. If I have STP, is it valid for me to purchase the tickets and enjoy the discounted rates? Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Hello Suriaia73,
Welcome to MySwissAlps!
Yes, the Swiss Travel Pass covers Tirano to St.Moritz. Please take a look at this link for your reference. Look at the red line between those two towns and that means the train route is covered:
I will include a detailed link about the Swiss Travel Pass and another link to purchase the Swiss Travel Pass in case you haven’t done so already:
I hope this helps!
Best regards,
Suzanne

UserInactive83503 postsReply 2 of 20 • 8 December 2019 at 14:40:21 #926193Thank you so much Suzanne. Can you suggest other than Bernina Express – panaromic coach. I would prefer to ride a coach that window can be opened for a better view. Thank you again for your help.
UserInactive83503 postsReply 3 of 20 • 8 December 2019 at 15:55:00 #926194Hello Suriaia73,
You’re welcome! The trains in Switzerland have fairly large windows so you would have a chance to see the beautiful scenary as you sit on the train. You didn’t mentioned how long you would be in Switzerland and where your travel base is? Please let me know, so I may suggest various train routes for you. In the meanwhile, I suggest the Bernese Oberland region especially when you go along Lake Thun. However, it is the other side of Switzerland, and it depends how long you will be here.
Here is a link with the various panoramic train trips in Switzerland:

Happy planning!

If you plan to go around opening train windows you need to consider the other passengers in the carriage.
You might want to read this http://www.myswissalps.com/forum/topic/incident-on-mgb-train-between-andermatt-and-sedrun. Although not a regular occurrence you need to be aware of this.
When are you travelling?
UserInactive83503 postsReply 5 of 20 • 9 December 2019 at 0:05:22 #926196You don’t need to ‘purchase tickets’, because a STP SwissTravel Pass , once purchased and used on a valid day is a what is known in English as a ‘rover’ ticket. (http://www.lexico.com/en/definition/rover_ticket)
In the case of the STP it is valid right across the main ‘national’ network of Swiss transport.
This includes the Bernina Railway. If you avoid the Bernina Express there will be nothing extra to pay if you already hold a valid STP
UserInactive83503 postsReply 6 of 20 • 9 December 2019 at 0:22:45 #926197You are right, the Bernina Railway has plenty of trains on it that are not the ‘Bernina Express’. In my opinion the normal trains are a more genuine local travel experience. If you avoid the BEX you should find coaches on all the normal trains that have some opening windows.
Incidentally on the Albula line Chur – St Moritz, the new ‘Alvra’ coach sets have one vehicle designated as ‘photographers car’ with opening windows

UserInactive83503 postsReply 9 of 20 • 9 December 2019 at 4:58:35 #926200Dear 1960man, thank you for the very useful info. I plan to buy 3days STP which will cover my stay in Iseltwald from 23-24-25 Jan 20, 26 Jan 20, I’ll be travelling to Tirano and plan to take Bernina Exp on 27 Jan 20. I may already utilized the 3-days STP, thus, looking for a cheaper alternative for a trip from Tirano to St Moritz on Bernina Railway but maybe other than Bernina Express coach which will cost me about CHF76/pax. I have 5 children (2 youth and 3 kids below 16yrs).
I thank you in advance for if you have any other suggestion. Thank you
UserInactive83503 postsReply 10 of 20 • 9 December 2019 at 6:20:56 #926201Hello Suriaia73,
I’m not sure if I read up on the conversation correctly, but you do know that the Swiss Travel Pass is also available for more than 3 days?! See the link in Suzanne’s first reply for details.
Alternatively you can look at the Saver Day Pass to cover additional days of travelling.
– http://www.myswissalps.com/saverdaypassMake sure you check the “Where it’s valid” section for details.
To check out regular ticket prices and standard discounts for the children on Swiss trains use the links below:

StephReply 11 of 20 • 9 December 2019 at 6:24:37 #926202I recommend using the SBB Mobile app (bit.ly/2ICIUHi) for checking train, bus, boat and cable way timetables, finding fares* and buying tickets on-line if required. In the unlikely event you don’t have a device capable of running the app then you can use the timetable on the SBB website (bit.ly/2HH1U7B).
* The SBB website shows half-fare prices by default, the mobile app allows you to nominate whether to show full or half-fares (by editing the passenger details in settings) and is also smart enough to offer you the Saver Day Pass (http://www.myswissalps.com/saverdaypass) if that offers the best fare. The app can also display a platform map (at least at the larger stations) to help you make connections. You can also easily filter modes of transport (eg bus or ship).
The app will always show the fastest, most direct routes unless you tell it you want to go a longer way round by including other stations to go VIA. For example, if you wanted to follow the Golden Pass route you would need to search the SBB app looking for Luzern to Montreux via Interlaken and Zweisimmen.
UserInactive83503 postsReply 12 of 20 • 9 December 2019 at 8:23:32 #926203Noted and have a great day ahead! Thank you
UserInactive83503 postsReply 13 of 20 • 14 December 2019 at 2:25:22 #926204Hi Suzanne, sorry to bother you again. But, I do not confirmation with you on validity of STP. If I have a valid STP and I want to use it at Tirano station for Bernina Express, is it valid? I know that with STP, I can ride a buss for free from Tirano to Lugano. But, I just want a re-confirmation that I can use the STP at Tirano station to take Bernina Express to St Moritz. Some people said that STP is only applicable inside Switzerland.
Again, thank you so much in advance for your assistance.
Reply 14 of 20 • 14 December 2019 at 5:35:05 #926205For the purposes of the Bernina Express, Tirano is effectively in Switzerland. There is an SBB station in Tirano. No problems.
You have reservations for the bus and the train, right? Reservations are not covered by the Swiss Travel Pass but you must have them.
Reply 15 of 20 • 14 December 2019 at 6:40:30 #926206Hi Suriaia,
Just to reiterate, yes the Swiss Travel Pass is valid for use from Tirano to St Moritz. You can download the Swiss Travel Pass validity map here: http://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpass/validity
Make sure you have a seat reservation if you are travelling on the Bernina Express. http://www.myswissalps.com/berninaexpress/tickets
No seat reservation required if you opt for the regular trains. Be sure to use the SBB timetable to check for your train connections.
Regards,
Anna
UserInactive83503 postsReply 16 of 20 • 14 December 2019 at 12:18:09 #926207Dear Rockoyster,
Yes, will purchase seat reservation separately, thank you for reminding. Thank you
UserInactive83503 postsReply 17 of 20 • 14 December 2019 at 12:24:51 #926208Hi Anna,
Thank you so much for the confirmation and sharing the link. Thank you
Reply 18 of 20 • 14 December 2019 at 19:47:41 #926209Just noticed you are travelling late January. The BEX bus does not commence operations until 20th February. See http://www.rhb.ch/fileadmin/user_upload/redaktion/Home_Marketing/Panoramazuege/Bernina_Express/Fahrplaene/BEX_Fahrplan_de_en_it_fr_WEB.pdf.
UserInactive83503 postsReply 19 of 20 • 15 December 2019 at 3:06:55 #926210It’s the BEX bus from Tirano-Lugano-Tirano is it? Thanks for the info
Reply 20 of 20 • 15 December 2019 at 3:24:33 #926211That’s correct. The only other way to get from Lugano to Tirano is to head down into Italy and go by train via Milan and/or Monza.
