Swiss Travel Pass – visit border towns

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning to cross the border into nearby towns while visiting Switzerland and is unsure if the Swiss Travel Pass covers transport to Annemasse, France. They also seek recommendations for other border towns they can visit on their trip.

Key takeaways:
  • Annemasse is free with the Swiss Travel Pass as it's part of the Leman Express network.
  • The Swiss Travel Pass also covers boat trips on Lake Geneva to French villages like Yvoire and Evian.
  • You can take a train to Rheinfelden and easily walk across to the German side.

I’m planning to cross the border at some of the cities in Switzerland to visit nearby towns of other countries, but I am not sure whether it is covered by the Swiss Travel Pass.

From my research, seems a French town name Annemasse is quite close to Geneva, I just not sure whether the transport to there is covered by STP.

Another thing I know is STP covers the Bernina Express to Tirano and the bus along the Italy north side.

Do you all have any other good recommendations? Provided it is covered by STP, or just need to spend a little bit more to cross the border.

    Thanks first!

First of all Annemasse. I have been visiting Annemasse for around 60 years (due to having relatives in France on the other side of Geneva for 60 years until my last surviving uncle died in October) and was last there just 1 month ago (see picture of the cross border train and view from the station across to the Jura mountains). There isn’t really much to see there.

Yes, Annemasse is ‘free’ with STP because the railway is a joint operation between Swiss and French railways (part of the Leman Express cross border integrated network)

Other towns outside Switzerland free on STP (for geographical or railway ownership reasons) are:

    Germany:

    Konstanz

Waldshut (local train from Koblenz across a big bridge over the Rhine river)

Jestetten and Lotstetten – Two stations in Germany between Eglisau and Schaffhausen (geopolitical quirk of history)

    Italy:

Domodossola (Italy) and all stations between Iselle – Domodossola

all stations on the Italian section of the Centovalli railway (Domodossola – Camedo)

    Tirano (Bernina railway southern terminus

    Hi Yenhan10,

The Swiss Travel Pass is also valid for boat trips on Lake Geneva to the French village of Yvoire and Evian. If you like small villages, you can take a train to Rheinfelden (on the main route to Basel) and walk across the bridge to the German side (also called Rheinfelden).

    Anna
