Swiss trip: point-to-point tickets for children?

Short summary – read this first

Krisztina is traveling to Switzerland next Wednesday to Sunday with her three kids aged 10-13. She needs advice on using the Swiss Travel Pass with a Family card during their trip, specifically whether her kids can travel free on point-to-point tickets between Basel and Zurich.

Key takeaways:
  • Order your complimentary Swiss Family Card with the Swiss Travel Pass for your kids to travel free.
  • You won’t need additional tickets for your family for travel covered by the Swiss Travel Pass.
  • For non-pass travel days, consider the Saver Day Pass or the child's day pass at CHF 19 each for cheaper options.

Hello, I am travelling to Switzerland next Wednesday to Sunday with 3 kids 10-13 years old. On Wednesday and Sunday we will only travel between Basel Airport and accomodation in Zurich. The 3 days in-between I will need the flexibility provided by the Swiss Travel Pass with Family card for the kids. Can my kids travel free if I buy point to point ticket for my Basel-Zurich trip? Or is there any option cheaper than buying a 6 days Travel card? Thank you for your answer in advance! Krisztina

    Hi Krisztina,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

Thank you for sharing your plans. If I have understood you correctly, you will have the Swiss Travel Pass. If so, do order your complimentary Swiss Family Card when purchasing the pass. That way, your 3 children who are aged 10-13 years old can travel for free whilst with you. More information can be found below, overview, where to buy:

Having the Swiss Travel Pass, no further tickets are required for you or your children. Just present your Swiss Travel Pass and Swiss Family Card when asked. You’ll only need tickets (they will be discounted) for some mountain excursions.

Let me know if I have understood you correctly, or will you have days where you won’t be traveling with the Swiss Travel Pass? If so, you’ll need tickets for all of you on those days. Options:

    1. Adults would travel at full fare or you may find a Saver Day Pass that’s cheaper.

    2. The children would pay half price tickets or it could be cheaper to purchase the children a child’s day pass at CHf19 each.

    3. Supersaver tickets for the Adults – can be cheaper but you are bound by date and specific departure times, if you miss the connection, you would have to buy a new ticket.

    Handy links:

For your children to travel free on point-to-point tickets, the parents would need to purchase these tickets with a Swiss Half Fare Card. Given you would only be traveling to/from Basel and Zurich, I don’t think it would make sense to buy a Swiss Half Fare Card for the two trips if you had the Swiss Travel Pass for your other days. As with the Swiss Travel Pass, you would apply for your complimentary Swiss Family Card.

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask any additional questions.

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda
