SwissPass half price travel and parking in Zurich as a Swiss resident

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named Ronboy is seeking advice on two topics as a new resident in Switzerland. He wants to know if purchasing a Swiss Travel Pass grants him half-price travel, particularly for local journeys in Zurich, and he’s confused about parking regulations related to white and blue spaces. He is looking for clear and concise information on these matters.

Key takeaways:
  • You will automatically receive a Swiss Travel Pass when applying for a GA Travelcard or Half Fare Travelcard at SBB shops or train stations, which provides discounts on public transport.
  • For blue zone parking, display a parking disc on your dashboard, which you can buy from gas stations or supermarkets, while white zone parking requires payment, often by the hour.

    Hi
As a new resident of Switzerland I have a few questions which i have not been able to answer completely.

The first If i purchase a Swisspass will it entitle me to half price travel everywhere including short local journeys into Zurich? , Where do i buy it? and can i use it for family members as well or is just me?

The second question i have is about parking i am confused about the significance of white and blue spaces and just who can park in them?

    Can anyone help?

    Hi Ronboy,

Welcome to MySwissAlps and welcome to Switzerland.

You will automatically get a SwissPass when you apply for a GA Travelcard or a Half Fare Travelcard at any SBB shop or train station. If you purchase the Half Fare Card, you get discounts up to 50% on tickets for public transport as well as mountain transportation. Please look up the SBB website for further information.

If you park in a blue zone (marked by blue lines and sign), you are required to display a parking disc on your dashboard. This disc can be purchased from gas stations or even supermarkets. Parking duration in a blue zone is usually regulated (up to 60 minutes only or more depending on the places). Parking in white zones usually requires some payment (per hour or per entry for instance).

    Hello Ronboy

As (‘Moderator’) Anna points out, this forum is geared to travellers visiting Switzerland, not to people (newly) resident in the country.  However I have two (related) points which are relevant to both tourists and residents.

Firstly Switzerland has the world’s best public transport system.  All modes of transport are extremely frequent, and are timed to interconnect with each other. The punctuality of all modes rivals Japanese trains.

Secondly you can get the freedom of that public transport system by investing in a public transport pass valid for the whole country.

If you are a tourist (like me) you can (like me) invest in a Swiss TRAVEL Pass.

If you are resident in Switzerland you do not qualify for an STP.  But you can invest in a General Abonnement, currently just 3,990 CHF for one year.  I am British, and I know that that price is cheaper than what many English commuters pay on their season tickets into London.

    Kind regards
    Roger
