10 days Switzerland in mid-April, best time or move to May?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler and their spouse are planning their first trip to Switzerland from April 11 to April 21 and are unsure if they should stick with April or switch to May. They seek advice on a good itinerary for an 8-9 day visit during mid-April, preferring public transport and aiming to enjoy snow, moderate hikes, and local culture without focusing on museums.

Key takeaways:
  • Look for itineraries focused on lower elevation hikes suitable for mid-April to enjoy the natural beauty.
  • The Swiss Travel Pass can be a good option for convenient public transport travel around Switzerland.
  • Consider that May might offer blooming nature for those seeking vibrant scenery while hiking.

    Hello friends,

My spouse and I are planning our first visit to Switzerland mid-April. We have our flights booked arriving Zurich 11 Apr and departing on 21 Apr.

Based on what I have read, April is a tricky month to visit as it is almost end of winters but summer hasn’t kicked in – I also notice the blogs and articles mention that it would still be beautiful. We are a bit confused and now considering if we should keep our tickets for April or move to May.

Where can I find a good itinerary/guide for a 8-9 days in Switzerland specifically for mid-April? We are OK to buy the Swiss Rail Pass and travel around in the public transport rather than driving and would like to enjoy some snow as well as a few regular low to medium intensity hikes during our visit.

We are looking to relax and enjoy the nature, local culture and food. We are not that keen on museum tours.

    Any guidance would be appreciated.

    Hi trvl3r,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

That’s great to hear you will be visiting Switzerland for the first time.  Very exciting.

Correct, April (and May) is in between the winter and summer seasons so may not feel like it’s the best time to visit. See our guide for visiting during the course of the year:  https://www.myswissalps.com/planning/practical/best-time-to-visit/

Definitely there are still lots to see and do but this would depend on your actual plans.  For example lower elevation hikes would be possible, the snow should have melted by then and you may not need to travel on mountain railways to access them.  The trees could be still bare, so if you after leaves and flowers blooming whilst you hike, May should be better.

Perhaps take a look at our itineraries section below to acquire some ideas or if need be, you can request a personalised itinerary.  More details here:

It could be, depending on your plans and the areas you will be visiting, the Swiss Travel Pass could be the way forward or perhaps one of the regional passes may suffice.  I’d start off by reading a little on the Swiss rail passes available below:

I hope this gets you started. Feel free to reach out with any additional questions.

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda
