The haute route in late June early July

Short summary – read this first

A couple is planning to hike the Haute Route in late June and early July and is seeking advice on trail conditions and the status of high-altitude huts. They are okay with some snow but are concerned about difficult conditions that might arise from extended snow cover. They appreciate any first-hand experiences related to hiking in the high Alps during this time.

Key takeaways:
  • Expect some trails to still be covered in snow during late June and early July, so prepare accordingly.
  • Check the Swiss Alpine Club (SAC) website for information on hut openings and conditions.
  • Consider carrying an ice axe for safety at higher altitudes.
  • If the Haute Route seems too challenging, look into lower altitude options like sections of the Via Alpina or the Alpine Passes Trail.
  • Make sure to be in good shape and well-prepared for high-altitude hikes.

My wife and and I would like to hike the Haute Route (or some similar high altitude extended hike), and our most convenient time would be late June and early July. Does anyone have input on trail conditions then? We are not afraid of a little occasional snow in the passes, but worry about extended periods of slogging through snow in cold conditions. Also are the high altitude huts open this time of the year? Thanks for any first-hand info on hiking in the high alps that time of year.

Hi rcl1884! Late June/early July is rather early in the season. Most paths and huts will be open, but there will still be large sections covered by snow. Carrying an ice axe may even be necessary, as you’ll get as high up as nearly 3,000 metres. The SAC website informs you about huts along the way; this information be helpful too. If you think this is too strenuous, you can search for easier alternatives at lower altitude, such as sections of the Via Alpina or the Alpine Passes Trail. By all means, make sure that you’re in good shape and prepare well for your mountain hikes.
