Things to do for a 2-hour layover in Tirano

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a day trip on the Bernina Express from Chur to Tirano with their spouse and 10-year-old daughter. They want to know if they have enough time during their 2-hour layover to enjoy some pizza, gelato, and see historical sights like the cathedral. They’re looking for advice on what to do and where to get the best gelato in Tirano.

Key takeaways:
  • Tirano is small enough to explore on foot, so you can see the town center within 2 hours.
  • Make sure to prioritize your activities, as dining and waiting for gelato can take up more time than expected.
  • Check local resources for historic center routes to maximize your sightseeing during the layover.
  • Consider grabbing gelato closer to the end of your layover to avoid missing your train.

We (myself, spouse, and 10 year old) are taking the Bernina Express from Chur to Tirano and back in the same day. My daughter wants to try pizza or gelato in Italy, and I would like to see some historic sights such at the historic cathedral during our 2 hour layover. Is there enough time to do much during the layover? Do you have a favorite place to get gelato? What is your favorite thing to do in Tirano? Many thanks in advance for your help!

    Hi Asd1001,

Tirano is a fairly small town. You can explore the town centre on foot in less than 2 hours. You can find information about the historic centre route (which includes all the tourist highlights) on the website here: http://www.visitatirano.it/ (scroll down to change language option to English).

The are various restaurants near the train station and the town centre.

    Regards,

    Anna

    Hi Asd1001,

We were just there in early May and did the same roundtrip return. I also thought we had alot of time to have lunch and explore the tiny town. However, after our lunch of pasta (and service was fast), we lined up for our gelato and couldn’t even buy it because the train was leaving in 10 mins. We did not even get the chance to explore the sights. Just an FYI

    Regards,

    Louise
