Just back from a fantastic trip to Switzerland. I was worried at first about the high cost of formal meals at lunchtime, but I was able to eat very well from the excellent range of sandwiches, packed salads, cakes etc. in the ubiquitous Coop and Migros supermarkets. These were very good. A substantial cheese and tomato roll, with extra salad bits, was about CHF4 to CHF5 and a delicious cake (try the nut or cinnamon varieties) about CHF2 or less. All good quality, with fantastic bread. Best value drink is Iced Tea – only CHF1.50 for a 1 litre bottle in Migros. Apple juice is also reasonable, but Coke and other sweet drinks are expensive. A banana from Coop cost .50CHF – about 35p. Coffee is generally about CHF4.
There’s a brilliant independent bakery shop inside Migros at Spiez, next to the station.
A pizza bought on Chur Station cost about CHF8. Hot snacks such as pasta, hamburgers, are on the very expensive side. A meal at an inn will generally set you back CHF20 to CHF30. These will be substantial but there will often be little choice.
Puddings, ice cream etc, are expensive. If you’re going into Italy (say Tirano or Domodossola on the train) it’s worth waiting for an ice cream – I paid 1 euro for a fabulous small Gelato outside Domodossola station.
