Three recommended hikes from Grindelwald

Short summary – read this first

Hugh and Lisa are planning a hiking trip to Grindelwald, Switzerland, in mid to late September. They will stay for at least four nights and are looking for recommendations for three challenging hikes that showcase the beautiful alpine scenery, including glaciers and valleys. Experienced hikers, they seek routes that fit their fitness level, specifically hikes in the 10-20 km range with an altitude gain of around 1000 meters.

Key takeaways:
  • Consider hiking from Schynige Platte to First for stunning views; it’s a favorite in the area.
  • The Eiger Trail offers a great experience, starting at Alpiglen and ending at Eigergletscher; you can extend it by starting from Grindelwald or adding a leg to Mannlichen.
  • Check the Swiss Travel Pass for discounts on transportation and access to mountain lifts, which can enhance your hiking experience.

My wife and I, both 61, are planning a trip to Switzerland in mid to late September of this year. We love the outdoors and are avid hikers. After reviewing previous posts, it looks like Grindelwald is a perfect base for us for hikes into the surrounding mountains. We’re going to be in Grindelwald for at least four nights. We’re looking for recommendations for three hikes. We’re experienced hikers and want to enjoy the balance of beautiful terrain ( glaciers, peaks, valleys, lakes, waterfalls etc) with the difficulty of the hike. We’re comfortable with hikes in the 10-20 k range with altitude gain of 1000m or so. Do any of you have recommendations that maximizes the beauty, allows us to get up high in to the Alps and provides a good cross section of what the region has to offer ? Thank you in advance for your help.

    High Hugh and Lisa-

    Welcome!

Thanks for providing your dates and state of fitness. Nice time to hike. Not too likely that snows will block the high altitude trails. Not sure how you start your altitude gains. If you start at 2000 meters, the next 1000 00 are harder than if you start at 400 meters. 😉

Nonetheless , this is a good one. Might start at Schynige Platte.

    Hi Hugh and Lisa

Slowpoke’s suggestions are all good ones. Schynige Platte to First is probably my favorite hike in the area. I would get an early start as it will take a couple of hours to get from Grindelwald to SP. Also on the leg at SP be sure and take the Panaramaweg option. It adds maybe 20-30 minutes but you walk along a cliff top trail with views of the mountains on one side and the Interlaken lakes on the other.

The only other suggestion i would offer is to consider hiking the Eiger Trail. Traditionally it starts at Alpiglen and ends at Eigergletscher and it takes you right to the base of the Eiger. You can extend the hike on the front end by starting in Grindelwald and hiking to Alpiglen. Or you can extend it on the back end by hiking down from Eigergletscher to Kleine Scheidegg and continuing on to Mannlichen. Alternately you can go from KS to Wengernalp or even Wengen if you want a longer hike.

In my opinion the best bang for your buck would be the reverse direction. Start in Mannlichen and hike to KS then to Eigergletscher then Eiger Trail to Alpiglen. From Alpiglen you can catch the train to Grindelwald or just walk down to Grindelwald. This option is mostly downhill except for the 1 hour leg from KS to Eigergletscher so if you prefer uphill you would need to do it in the opposite direction.

Thank you. Great information. We will definitely do Schynige Platte to First and the Eiger trail route that Mark recommended. These two are exactly what we’re looking for. Mark, your comment about the Panaramaweg option is the “local” advice that we are seeking. Thanks to each of you, again.
