Tickets for direct train from Zurich to Milan

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named Link is planning a trip from Zurich to Rome, using a first-class Swiss Travel Pass. They are unclear about how to purchase a ticket for the Italian segment from Chiasso to Rome and when to do it. They want to know if they should buy the ticket in Zurich or online beforehand.

Key takeaways:
  • Purchase your ticket from Chiasso to Rome online or at a staffed SBB counter before your trip.
  • For the section from Zurich to Chiasso, you can take any train with a valid Swiss Travel Pass without needing to reserve a seat.
  • For the Italian leg, ensure you choose and book your train in advance, as seat reservation is mandatory.

I apologize for asking this but I am not quite clear on some of the details. I have a first class, Swiss Travel Pass which I will use on a direct train from Zurich to Milan to Rome. How, where and when do I purchase a ticket from the border, Chiasso, to Milan and on to Rome? Do I make that purchase in Zurich? Ahead of time online with the Italian train line? Is there a way to tell at booking online that the ticket needs to be from Chiasso to Rome but the train doesn’t stop in Chiasso?

    Thank you, again,

    Hi Link,

That’s right. With the Swiss Travel Pass you only need to get a ticket from Chiasso to Rome. I’m not sure if there’s a direct train from Zurich to Rome. You might need to change in Milan. The Zurich-Milan direct service operates a few times daily. You can use the SBB timetable to check for a suitable connection.

You can buy the ticket in advance or before your trip from a staffed counter at any SBB train station. You can also buy the ticket online. Options to purchase online are available here: http://www.myswissalps.com/traintickets/italy/price

I just made that train trip in reverse. I was coming from Rome to Zurich. The main stop being Milan which was approx halfway. We purchased a ticket and then took advantage of Swiss rail pass once we arrived. I think we paid 140 USD Oct 2021. The train makes very brief stops all along it’s route so yes def pre purchase your border ticket ahead of time and use mobile ticket so when the attendant comes by you can show them your ticket. Easy

The direct trains Zurich – Milano Centrale run 8 times per day. They all call briefly at Chiasso as it is the Swiss border station so all trains stop for train staff and customs purposes.

As long as you have a valid Swiss ticket up to the border and a valid Italian ticket south from Chiasso you will not need to get off the train

Thank you! So…to purchase the Italian part of the journey if I go online and purchase a ticket from Chiasso-Milan-Rome do I have to choose the train at that time too or can I just purchase the ticket and then just go on any train? Do I have to choose the train that we will be on from Zurich?

Thanks for you patience with me.

    Hi Link,

regarding the Swiss part of your trip, you can take any train if you have a valid Swiss Travel Pass and also there is no need to reserve a seat for that part of the journey (but you can do that if you want.)

But for the Italian part, you need to travel on the chosen train and also book your seats in advance. Book as early as possible. More details at http://www.myswissalps.com/traintickets/italy.

    I hope this helps,

    Ildiko

    Thank you!

Seems like most travelers start in Italy and then go north! I love both countries, whatever the direction!!!
