Timetable of the Bernina Express from Tirano

Short summary – read this first

Suebarbi is planning a 4-day trip to Switzerland from Bologna, aiming to catch the Bernina Express in the morning. She's unsure about the train schedule and whether it runs daily, as she's concerned about needing to stay overnight in Chur instead of Tirano. Help from the Switzerland Travel Centre has been unhelpful, so she's seeking advice from fellow travelers.

Key takeaways:
  • In winter, the Bernina Express operates once daily from Chur at 08:28, arriving in Tirano at 12:49.
  • Between April and October, the Bernina Express offers multiple daily departures, including a morning train from Tirano at 08:06.
  • If traveling outside peak season, consider other train options to enjoy similar scenic views without relying solely on the Bernina Express.
  • The Swiss Travel Pass can be a great option for unlimited travel on trains, including the Bernina Express, during your stay.

Good afternoon, I am having a bit of trouble working out what time the Bernina express leaves from Tirano in the morning and if it does.

I have seen in a couple of blogs the Bernina express only travels once a day from Chur to Tirano return, is this correct ??

My husband and I are travelling from Bologna the day before and want to catch the Bernina Express in the morning so we have plenty of time in the afternoon.

If the train only travels once a day we may have to stay in Chur overnight instead of Tirano.

I have, a number of times, tried to get information out of the Switzerland Travel information centre but they were no help what soever.

Thanks in advance for any information you can provide me with.

    Hi Suebarbi,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

The Bernina Express runs on a seasonal timetable. In winter, the service is limited to just one in each direction daily. In winter, the train leaves Chur at 08.28 and arrives in Tirano at 12.49. The train from Tirano leaves at 14.24 and arrives in Chur at 18.22.

Between April and October, the Bernina Express runs a few times a day. You can check the timetable here: tickets.rhb.ch/en/pages/fahrplan-bernina-express

When are you travelling? There is a morning Bernina Express from Tirano which runs in summer only (13 May – 22 October)

Have a look at the official timetable PDF, it will help you see the general pattern of trains on the Bernina railway.

    http://www.fahrplanfelder.ch/fileadmin/fap_pdf_fields/2023/950.pdf

On page 3/5, you can see the morning BEX shown as train PE 950 departing Tirano at 08.06 with footnote 13 clarifying the dates of operation. You can also see the indication at the foot of the page that the train avoids St Moritz and goes from Pontresina direct towards Chur

If you are travelling outside these dates, just take any of the other trains headed in yellow to St Moritz, visit St Moritz and then continue to Chur on the hourly regular IR express.

Thankyou both so much for your help.

We will be in Switzerland for just 4 days from the 29th of October until the 1st of November. So from the timetable it looks like we will have to stay in Chur so as not be back too late in the evening.

    Thanks again.

I don’t really understand you itinerary.

If your journey is Bologna – Chur then you must stay in Tirano, otherwise the journey north of Pontresina is likely to be after dark. You can do this without using the Bernina Express. All the trains offer the same views

    Hello Suebarbi,

The Bernina Express is of course, a lovely way to treat yourself. Large windows, air conditioning, snacks and drinks at your seat. Spacious seating in first class.

    Personal choice of course.

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda
