    Hello there,

First of all, I want to say that I really appreciate your website and the forums. The information has been really helpful in planning out trip to Switzerland.

We plan to go from Lucerne to Milan via train on April 25 2022. We have the Swiss Travel Pass. I read somewhere on your forums that we only need to pay for the ticket from Chiasso to Milan as the travel till Chiasso is covered by the Swiss Travel Pass. I just wanted to confirm that my understanding is correct. Is that so? Also which website/app would be a good place to buy the tickets?

Also since we will be returning to Switzerland after 3 days and our Swiss travel Pass will be valid, I wanted to know if there is any place or station near Lucerne where we could store our big suitcase/luggage for 3-4 days until we come back. Also what would the charges be for that duration? From what I have read and understand that lockers at train stations can be used for about 6 hours, not sure if they can be used for several days.

Any information you can provide will be much appreciated.

    Thanks and Regards.

    Hi NiBH,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

Your understanding is correct. If you have a Swiss Travel Pass, you only need a ticket for the Italian portion of your journey. From Lucerne to the border (Chiasso), this section is covered by the STP. For information about tickets to Italy including options to purchase online, here: http://www.myswissalps.com/traintickets/italy

If you would like to store your luggage for a few days, the Lucerne train station provides a luggage deposit service (CHF12 per luggage per day). There are also lockers available for rental up to 96 hours (prices vary according to sizes). Hope this helps.

    Regards,

    Anna

Yes, it is true that you need to buy a ticket only between Chiasso and Milan.

I would recommend using either the Trenitalia or Trenord website/app, depending on which train you are taking.

    – The Trenitalia Eurocity (EC) trains generally require seat reservations and are more expensive (EUR 12.90 if bought the day before), but tickets are for a specific train. It might be possible to continue on the same train on which you arrived in Chiasso without changing.

    – The local regional (RE) Trenord trains are cheaper (EUR 7.20 one-way), and allow you to take any train within 3 hours. These trains start in Switzerland, so you can change to them at either Lugano or Chiasso.

Both EC and RE trains take around 45-50 minutes from Chiasso to Milano Centrale.

For your luggage, it would actually be cheaper to ship it with the SBB luggage service from one station to another; it only costs CHF 12 per bag, and it arrives the day after tomorrow; but then you have 4 more days to pick it up without further charge.

Thanks Anna and Saeuliamtler for your replies.

I really like this option that you suggest.

The local regional (RE) Trenord trains are cheaper (EUR 7.20 one-way), and allow you to take any train within 3 hours. These trains start in Switzerland, so you can change to them at either Lugano or Chiasso.

If I buy ticket for travel on April 26th at 16:31 hrs from Chiasso, then till what time can I use that ticket. Currently I’m seeing an option for $6.81 on Trainline (see attached). If I buy this ticket, then can I actually board the train at Lugano so that we don’t have to change in Chiasso.

For your luggage, it would actually be cheaper to ship it with the SBB luggage service from one station to another; it only costs CHF 12 per bag, and it arrives the day after tomorrow; but then you have 4 more days to pick it up without further charge.

Your idea of shipping luggage is also excellent and cost effective. I checked the conditions of use. Under terms and conditions, it mentioned that GA travel card is allowed

Luggage can only be checked in if you have a ticket valid for the whole luggage transport route or one of the following annual travelcards: GA Travelcard, Point-to-Point Travelcard, Half Fare Travelcard, Regional Travelcard, FVP (travel discount for SBB employees), seven25 Travelcard, Modular Travelcard.

Will I be eligible for this service as a Swiss Travel Pass holder. If we can ship our luggage from Lucerne and receive it in Zurich, it will really make our trip to Italy more comfortable.

Any advice or information you have would be much appreciated.

    Hi NiBH,

You can buy the ticket from Chiasso to Milan in advance from any train station or from a list of resellers here: http://www.myswissalps.com/traintickets/italy. A single ticket within the Arcobaleno integrated fare network (which covers the Ticino region and also northern Lombardy in Italy) is usually valid up to 4 hours. Using this ticket in combination with the Swiss Travel Pass, you can get on any train connection from Lucerne to Milan via Lugano without having to change trains in Chiasso. And yes, you can use the station-to-station luggage service as long as you have a valid Swiss Travel Pass.

    Regards,

    Anna
