Train from Spiez to Milan reservation

Short summary – read this first

MNSandy is planning to travel from Spiez to Milan on Saturday, September 15, but found 2nd class seats fully booked on the 8:05 train. They are confused about seat assignments when booking first class and wondering about alternative routes like the Regio Express Lotschberger train, especially if the scenery is worth the extra travel time.

Key takeaways:
  • You should receive a seat number after completing your reservation for the first class seat.
  • Reservations are generally not needed for Swiss trains, so you can usually find a seat without one.
  • If you're concerned about seating on the Milan train, consider taking an earlier or later train that offers reservations.

I am trying to make reservations for the train from Spiez to Milan on Saturday, Sept 15, but the 8:05-10:37 train appears to be booked for 2nd class seats (which surprised me). It appears that I can still book first class seats on this train, but when I proceed with my reservation I don’t see an actual seat number but just a notation that I have a window seat. Shouldn’t I get an assigned seat number with a reservation/ticket?

If I cannot get tickets for the train mentioned above, how do I make a reservation on the Regio Express Lotschberger train from Spiez to Milan? Is the scenery that much better to justify the extra time on that route?

    Thank you!

    Hi MNSandy,

Where are you looking to buy tickets? We have a few sites you can check out here for trains to Italy: http://www.myswissalps.com/tr aintickets/italy

You should get a seat number once you’ve completed the reservation process either way.

The Lötschberger express runs from Spiez to Brig, you can then change to trains to Milan via Domodossola. Find train schedules here: http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable

If you want to reserve a seat for the trip look here: http://www.myswissalps.com/tr ain/reservations but Swiss trains don’t require reservations. I wouldn’t worry about making them. If anything, just the Italian part would be useful – but it is up to you.

If the Switzerland trains don’t take reservations, then how do I know that I will have a seat on the train when I buy a ticket?

Also, one additional question. I am trying to book a reservation for the 25518 regional train from Milano Central to Lugano on 9/21/2018, arriving in Lugano at 14:18 but always get a message preventing me from purchasing the ticket. Is it possible some regional trains don’t sell their tickets online? Or is there potentially an issue with this train route?

    Hi MNSandy,

According to the timetable, reservations are not offered on that train. Other departures do have reservations available (there will be an R on the timetable beside the train).

I’ve never made reservations on Swiss trains and always found a seat. From time to time around larger cities at rush hour I had to stand for 5/10 minutes until a commuter got off at their stop. The system is designed to just hop on and get a seat 95% of the time. If you want to be safe on the Milan train then go for an earlier or later train that offers a reservation.
