Interlaken to Venice with Swiss Travel Pass and Eurail Italy Pass

Short summary – read this first

Mike, a traveler from Australia, is planning a trip from Wengen/Interlaken OST to Venice in late June. He needs advice on how to navigate the train transfers between his Swiss Travel Pass and his Eurail Pass for Italy, specifically where to change trains and passes during his journey.

Key takeaways:
  • Use the Swiss timetable to find train routes and transfer points between Wengen/Interlaken OST and Venice.
  • Your Swiss Travel Pass will cover travel to the border towns of Domodossola or Chiasso, where you'll need to switch to your Eurail Pass for Italy.
  • Expect possible disruptions on the Simplon Line in late June but the Gotthard Line should be operational.

    Good evening from Australia.
I would like some advice regarding train station departure.
we will be travelling from Wengen/Interlaken OST to Venice in late June.

i will be using a first class Swiss Travel Pass while in Switzerland and then a Eurail Pass in Italy but I’m unsure how to get from Interlaken to Venice regarding where my Swiss Travel Pass will end. Where we change trains and where the Eurail Pass commences. Any advice regarding where we change trains and passes would be greatly appreciated.
    Regards Mike.

    Hello Mike D

Good (late) morning from England.  Get a map out showing Switzerland and Northern Italy.

I will begin by quoting from Anna’s reply one to your thread started on 9th May, even though she is writing about a journey in the opposite direction.

The most convenient route would be Venice – Milan – Domodossola – Spiez – Wengen. However the train line between Milan and Domodossola is currently being upgraded and I’m not sure whether the services are back to normal by October. A less complicated option would be Venice – Milan – Lugano – Lucerne – Interlaken – Wengen. From Lucerne you can take the scenic Lucerne-Interlaken Express to Interlaken Ost before continuing on the regional train to Wengen.

In ‘late June’ there is likely to be disruption on the Simplon Line, that is the line Domodossola-Milan.  The Gotthard Line, Lucerne-Lugano-Milan should be OK.    To give you detailed advice we need to know the EXACT DATE on which you will be travelling.

    Boundary for Public Transport Passes

I am GUESSING that you have a one country Eurail pass for Italy only.  (A global pass will be valid on Swiss TRAINS.)

The boundary on the Simplon Line is Domodossola.  The boundary on the Gotthard line is CHIASSO, a town 26 kms south of  Lugano and (only) 51 kms north of Milano Centrale.   In both cases there is no need to get off the train at the frontier station.  If the train you are travelling on is a EUROCITY, seat reservations will be required.

I will try and give you further help once I know your date of travel.

    Regards
    Roger

    Hi Mike D,

    In addition to Roger’s reply.

Here’s the Swiss Travel Pass coverage map, if you zoom into the area of the map which shows the Swiss / Italian border, you will be able to see the border towns of Domodossola and Chiasso that Roger mentions. Depending which train route you choose to reach Venice, you would pass either of the above towns.

Your Swiss Travel Pass would allow travel to these Swiss border towns before entering Italy, when you would need an additional ticket or rail pass for Italy.

More on travel to/from Italy in the link below:

You can research train routes from Wengen/Interlaken Ost to Venice by using the Swiss timetable. You will also be able to see when you would need to change trains too.  The Swiss timetable link is below:

    Kind regards,
    Yolanda
