Train Paris-Zurich, switch in Basel

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named Tmalave is planning a summer trip from Paris to Zurich and has concerns about tight train connections. They need to know if an 11-minute transfer at Basel is enough time and if they need to reserve seats on the Swiss train after their TGV-Lyria journey.

Key takeaways:
  • 11 minutes is usually sufficient to switch trains, especially if it’s a cross-platform connection.
  • There is no need to reserve seats for Swiss intercity trains, as they operate on a frequent schedule.

    Hi all,

We purchased TGV-Lyria tickets from Paris to Zurich for the summer. When we got the email confirmation, the tickets were not direct because all Paris trains will stop in Basel due to rail maintenance. Thus, we need to transfer to an SSB train from Basel to Zurich. Our tickets list a train number, and 11 minutes to switch trains. So my questions are:

    1) Will this be sufficient time to switch trains?

    2) On the TGV-Lyria we have seats reserved, but the tickets on the SSB train we don’t. Do we need to reserve tickets for this train?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Tmalave,

Welcome to the forum and thanks for joining MySwissAlps!

    1. No worries, 11 minutes is enough time to switch trains. This is probably a cross platform connection so all you have to do is cross over to the next platform.

    2. There is no need to make seat reservations on Swiss trains. Find out how train travel works here: http://www.myswissalps.com/train/practical/howtotravel

You don’t need reservations on Swiss inter city trains. As the interior of French TGV trains is somewhat compact you will probably find the Swiss internal train from Basel is more spacious! I expect it won’t matter too much which Basel – Zurich train you get on (there is a very frequent service).
