Hello,

I will be travelling in Switzerland with my 2 kids (ages 9 and 11) in early July. I am wondering which train pass to get for us for this itinerary:

-Sun. June 30, Zurich to Interlaken, staying in Interlaken.

-Mon.  Interlaken to Murren or Lauenbratten; staying in Interlaken.

-Tues.  Interlaken to Grindelwald; staying at Grindelwald Terminal.

-Wed. Grindelwald First;

-Thurs. Jungfraujoch;

-Thurs. eve: train from Grindelwald Terminal to Basel;

-Fri. Basel, flying out Sat. morning 7/6.

Would it be more economical to get a Swiss travel pass or Swiss Half Fare card, and/or the Jungfrau travel pass? For 1 adult and 2 kids. I’ve tried to calculate but it seems confusing.

That’s lovely to hear you will be visiting Switzerland in July.

Yes, it can be a little overwhelming when trying to work out which rail pass to purchase.  If you wanted to be sure of the best rail pass, the only way is to carry out some maths.  We have a handy guide to assist you with this.  Please take a look at the attached link.

Within, there is a downloadable spreadsheet you can use.  Thereon, the best rail pass will be displayed based on your daily activities.

At a glance, it could be the Jungfrau Travel Pass would be a good option as you will be there for a few days.  Your children would need a pass each, at CHF30 each.

If you did opt with the Jungfrau Travel Pass, you’d need point-to-point tickets  Zurich-Interlaken, and Interlaken-Basel.  Here, if your plans were fixed, you could look into Supersaver tickets, these do come with restrictions but can be favourable in price.

For convenience, many opt with the Swiss Travel Pass, which also means you can apply for the Swiss Family Card which would allow both your children to travel free whilst with you.  More on both below:
