Train ticket from Zurich HB to Florence

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named Anna is planning to travel from Zurich to Florence in the first week of June and is looking for the cheapest ticket options. She’s also interested in buying a Swiss Travel Pass for her 10-day stay in Switzerland and needs advice on ticket purchasing and discounts.

Key takeaways:
  • Check both trenitalia.com and SBB for ticket prices, as they can vary significantly.
  • If you have a valid Swiss Travel Pass, you only need to buy a ticket for the Italian section of your journey.
  • Tickets on the SBB website can typically be purchased 60 days in advance, so be prepared to wait if you need to book early.
  • Trainline.com can sometimes allow you to apply your Swiss Travel Pass discount, but check for any glitches if the discount isn't appearing as expected.
  • 20 minutes is generally enough time to change trains at Milan station, even with luggage.

    Hello

I need to travel from Zurich HB to Florence SMN first week of June. I am looking for cheapest ticket possible. Should I buy it on trenitalia.com or SBB?

currently it is showing me a price of 222,00 euro. Does this mean 222.00 euros?Any advise is greatly appreciated. I also plan to buy swiss travel pass as I will be close to 10 days in Switzerland and only I need to go to Florence from Zurich and back to Zurich.

    Thanks

I did a dummy return fare ‘purchase’ on the SBB planner and got a price 0f between 220 and 260 CHF = Swiss Francs. So that sounds similar to what you saw (but in Swiss Francs not Euros)

If you have a valid Swiss Travel Pass at both the start and end of your trip to Firenze you would only have to buy a ticket for the Italian part of the journey (ie Chiasso – Firenze)

I tried the German railway planner and got a much cheaper fare (Euro 146 there and back)

Thank you Anna and 1960man for your help. Really appreciate it.

I found trainline.com very user friendly web site. Can you please let me know if this site shows pass holder fares. If not can you please let me know what other site I can use to buy 4 months in advance?

thanks so much for all the help.

    Hello Anna,

With trainline.com, sometimes italian tickets and reservations can be purchased, 6 months in advance, so you don’t necessarily need another website. When purchasing, you can also key in your Swiss Travel Pass discount. Details as follows :

    1. At the Trainline website, click “Add discount and loyalty cards” (it’s right under the timetable).

    2. A new field with passenger info will appear. Click “Loyalty and rail cards” there.

    3. Then select “CFF”

    4. Select “Abonnement Général 1st class” or “Generalabonnement (GA) 2nd class”. The GA in this case offers the same discount as the Swiss Travel Pass.

As you are planning to purchase the Swiss Travel Pass, here is useful link to read. https://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpass

    I hope this helps.

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda

    Hi Yolanda

thank you so much for all the details you gave above. I followed the above steps and selected (GA) second class but I don’t see any discount being applied to the price shown to me without selecting any passes. I also tried to select (GA) with RailPlus 2nd class but that also did not reduce the price for me.

Not sure if I am doing anything wrong. I will be buying Swiss travel pass so trying to get the best price using that. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

    thanks again

    Hi Anna,

You’re right, trainline.com doesn’t show any price difference for Zurich-Florence when adding the GA. That must be a temporary glitch I think. You can wait a while until it’s solved, or book through the SBB website.

Thank you Arno for double checking for me. I checked on SBB website and it says tickets are not available now. Are they available only 60 days in advance? If so not sure if I should wait until then or buy on SBB ?

another question on a different topic

is 20 minutes enough time to change trains at Milan station? I will have some luggage though.

Thanks so much in advance for helping me out.

    Truly appreciate it.

    Thanks

    Anna

    Hi Anna,

You can generally purchase train tickets via SBB online at the earliest 60 days before your journey. So you probably should wait.

And yes, I think 20 mins is more than enough time to change trains at Milan station.

    Regards,

    Anna
