We plan to arrive in Lugano by train and cross to Lake Como area (and return) in September. Although I know much can change, I want to be pro-active on requirements. Official Italian site does not offer English option. We are fully vaccinated US citizens and our flights are RT Zurich. Feedback on situation and how to keep informed is much appreciated.

Would you please review our proposed train travel and let me know if buying the Swiss Half-fare Card is a good choice? We want flexibility for changes and refunds (which we hope will not be needed, of course) and plan on first-class tickets. Also, how far in advance should we purchase? We would like to wait for weather forecasts on the Jungfraujoch and Schilthorn – is availability likely to be good in mid-September? Many thanks!

September 10 – Zurich airport to city

September 12 – Zurich to Wengen

    September 13 & 14 – Jungfraujoch/Schilthorn

September 15 – Wengen to Chiasso to Como San Giovanni

September 19 – Como San Giovanni to Luzern

September 21 – Luzern to Zurich airport

    Hi Marjie,

Glad to know this website has been a good resource for you.

Looking at your itinerary, the Swiss Half Fare Card might be a good idea to save on transportation tickets. You can find more information including where to purchase online here: http://www.myswissalps.com/swisshalffarecard

If you want more flexibility and convenience, consider getting the Swiss Travel Pass. You can compare these two travel pass using this quick guide here: http://www.myswissalps.com/train/ticketspasses/practical/chooserailpass

You can purchase either of these travel passes online from a list of resellers (use the links above). Best to do it when you have confirmed your travel details, perhaps a few weeks before your departure so you have plenty of time to get it by email or hard copy. There are also options to buy them at the train station at the airport.

I agree with you that for trips to Jungfraujoch and Schilthorn, it’s best to look at the weather forecast first before getting the tickets. But you should get the travel pass in advance to take advantage of the discounts. I recommend for trips that are weather-dependent, you can buy your tickets on the day of your visit. For convenience you can download the SBB Mobile , and this will enable you to buy your tickets on the go. You can download the SBB Mobile app here: http://www.myswissalps.com/aboutswitzerland/practical/websites

I hope I answered your questions. If you need further assistance, feel free to come back and post.

    Regards,

    Anna
