Train Wengen-Füssen, Germany: where to rent a car?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named Kimconn is planning to leave Wengen and head to Germany, specifically the Fussen and Neuschwanstein area. They are looking for advice on where to pick up a rental car on their journey and considering whether to stay overnight or head directly to Munich for more rental options. They prefer to explore the area by car but want to find the best way to transition from train to rental car.

Key takeaways:
  • Consider taking the train all the way to Munich, as it provides more car rental options and organized day trips to attractions like Neuschwanstein Castle.
  • For a smooth rental experience, check with rental companies like Europcar to find locations near your arrival point.
  • Fussen is a good midway stop, but traveling directly to Munich is recommended for better logistics.

We are leaving Wengen on Sunday 6/4 to head to Germany, specifically Fussen & Neuschweinstein area. We want to spend a day with a rental car exploring that area, as well as a few stops on the way to Munich. I’m wondering what your best advice is for where we should look to train to for a good stop to make the transition from train to rental car? Crossing the border in a car doesn’t seem to be a good option, economically. It may be best we stay overnight until Monday, when rental car may be more accessible. I’ve considered just taking train all the way in to Munich and then renting and doing our day trip from there, but prefer this other option if we can make it work. Thank you for your help with this Switzerland/Germany question! 🙂

    Hi Kimconn,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

Just so we are on the same page. You will be traveling in Switzerland by train, from Wengen and you would like tips, as to where best to pick up a rental car in Germany? If I have understood correctly, I would suggest you connect up with the rental car company you had in mind and see where they have locations in Germany. Perhaps that will help determine, where you would take the train to in Germany from Switzerland? Europcar I know has a large presence throughout all of Europe, so no doubt has locations throughout Germany.

Train access to Germany from Switzerland is good, more information can be found here:

I hope this gets you started, feel free to reach out with any further questions.

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda

Thanks Yolanda. Yes, we will be traveling in Switzerland for 4 days, with our final departure from Wengen to Germany. I was hoping others that had departed Switzerland similarly may have some suggestions, based on their experiences. Have done a little research and not producing as many obvious results as I would have hoped. Looking for a good stop just across the border that would be a good place to stay and potentially get a car. I realize this could also be a question for a Germany chat as well 🙂 Thank you!

Fussen is midway between Switzerland and Munich, with no large cities in between, so a train would be best, rather than switching to a car

Thank you for your input! Seems like maybe it’s best just to spend the long day getting from Wengen to Munich then, and venture out with a car from there. Appreciate your response.

    Hi KimConn,

I think taking the train all the way to Munich is a good idea. There are plenty of tour companies offering day trips to Schwangau and Neuschwanstein Castle from Munich. And you’ll certainly find more rental car options in a big city like Munich.

    Regards,

    Anna
