Is Lugano to Milan covered by the Swiss Travel Pass?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named Carole is planning a 10-day trip primarily in Switzerland, intending to travel from Lugano to Milan at the end. She needs advice on whether her Swiss Travel Pass will cover the train ride to Milan or if she needs to buy an additional ticket.

Key takeaways:
  • If you take a TILO train from Lugano to Milan, your Swiss Travel Pass covers the journey to Chiasso, but you'll need to purchase a separate ticket for the Italian section from Chiasso to Milan.
  • For direct access to Malpensa airport from Lugano, take the S10 TILO train and buy a ticket from Mendrisio to Malpensa at the Lugano booking office.
  • Check the online resources for purchasing Italian leg tickets for added convenience.

New to the forum, so apologies if the answer is already on here somewhere….I am planning to buy a Swiss Pass, as most of my planned 10 day trip is in Switzerland, but the last leg will be from Lugano to Milan. Do I buy a separate ticket for this, or is it covered by my pass if I take a Swiss train? Thanks!

    Hello Carole

Welcome to MySwissAlps  Thank you for your question.

The Swiss Canton of Ticino and the neighbouring Italian province of Lombardia have worked very hard to create a coordinated local train system known as TILO.  Every hour, at 02 minutes past the hour, a RE80 TILO train leaved Lugano bound for Milan Centrale via Chiasso, Como and Monza.  If you take one of these trains your Swiss Travel Pass (https://www.myswissalps.com/travel-ticket/swiss-travel-pass/) will take you as far as Chiasso.  The Lugano booking office will sell you the ticket for the Italian section of your journey from Chiasso.

I suspect, however, that you are heading for Malpensa airport.  If that is the case, you take the S10 TILO train direct to Malpensa which leaves at 06 minutes past each hour.  Make sure you get in the right part of the train!  Get the Lugano booking office to sell you a ticket from Mendrisio (the last station in Switzerland on this route) to Malpensa.

Which train company (Swiss or Italian) is running the train is irrelevant.  All the TILO trains look the same.  They are a slightly modified version of a Swiss design which is to be seen all over Europe.  The drivers all speak the same language – Italian!

    Best wishes

    Roger

Thank you both – that’s so helpful! Actually we are spending a day in Milan and flying in the evening, so going straight to Milan Centrale from Lugano, but the information still applies.
