Train connections from Zurich Airport to Lucerne

Short summary – read this first

Brad is arriving at Zurich International Airport around 11:00 and planning to travel directly to Lucerne by train, while using the Swiss Travel Pass. He wants to confirm whether he needs to take two trains: one from the airport to Zurich's main train station and another to Lucerne. After reading responses, he realizes that he may have a direct option and that the journey shouldn't be a concern.

Key takeaways:
  • You can take a direct train from Zurich International Airport to Lucerne once every hour, making transfers unnecessary in many cases.
  • If a direct train isn't available, just take the next train available that works with your schedule.
  • Always check the timetable for current train options, as it provides the most reliable information about your journeys.
  • Utilize the Swiss Travel Pass for flexibility; there's no restriction on which train you can take.

Thank you for your help in the past and I hope this will be a relatively easy question to answer.

We are flying into Zurich International Airport arriving early appx. 1100 and the plans would be to go to Lucerne directly by train (we will have the Swiss Travel Pass).

In my reading it appears that we have to take a train at Zurich International Airport to the main train station in Zurich and from there take a train to Lucerne????????

Is this scenario correct regarding taking two trains? (one from Zurich Int’l Airport and then another from the main Zurich train station).

Sorry for the confusion but thank you in advance for your help.

    Brad

    Hi Brad,

Good choice on the Swiss Travel Pass for your stay in Switzerland: http://www.myswissalps.com/sw isstravelpass

There are frequent trains to Lucerne, some requiring no changes, some requiring one change or two. You should have a look at our timetable tool to decide what train you would like to take: http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable

It also depends on when you clear customs. The advantage of the Swiss Travel Pass is that you’re not restricted to a particular train, so you can just arrive at the station and take the next train connection that is convenient for you.

    Hope this helps!

    Maria.

    Maria:

Thank you for your prompt reply and the link provided.

in clarification and to summarize it appears we could take a train directly out of Zurich Int’l airport and hopefully (depending on where we clear customs) that could be a direct train to Lucerne. If not we would just take the next train which connects to that applicable train.

I think I was reading more into it and appears getting to Lucern from the airport will not be a major concern.

    Thank you

    Brad

The direct no changes service between Zürich Flughafen and Luzern is the route IR75. It happens once per hour at xx.15 past each hour from Flughafen

    Hi Brad-

1960man has given the important answer. One direct train per hour.

There are however, trains at intermediate times, requiring a change at Zuerich main station.

If you do choose to change at Zürich, it can possibly be a minor nuisance, depending on which tracks you come in on. There are different levels, but good signs. If you miss, wait a few minutes and take the next one.

Some of the follow-on trains may require another change, for example, at Zug. To avoid those, use the timetable as linked by Maria. The timetable is the essential travelers aid in Switzerland. It would also have shown you the direct train.

Another option is to relax for a few minutes in the food court in the rail station building at the airport, at street level. Grab a tea or coffee or bite to eat, wait till about xx05, then ride the escalators down to your train.
