Swiss transport decision: train, car, campervan?

Short summary – read this first

A couple is planning a three-week trip to Switzerland starting from Milan in late September, with plans to visit Austrian and Dolomite destinations. They've previously traveled to the Berner Oberland and Valais by train but are considering renting a campervan for this trip, and they're looking for advice on transport costs, parking, and travel passes for mountain transport.

Key takeaways:
  • Factor in extra costs for renting a car like parking fees and potential tolls.
  • Small villages often have free parking, but it’s good to check ahead.
  • Consider obtaining a Swiss Travel Pass for easy access to mountain trains and cable cars during your stay.
  • Look into renting a campervan for added flexibility while navigating through Switzerland's scenic routes.

My wife and I arrive into Milan for the last three weeks in September to visit Switzerland, with a few days each in Austria and The Dolomites. We have traveled the Berner Oberland and Valais parts of Switzerland before but only by train, never by auto. We like staying in mountain villages such as Kandersteg, Murren, Lauterbrunnen, Leukerbad, Blatten, Sonogno where we have been but also in Appenzellerland where we have not yet been. The modes of transport we are considering are train, auto and camping in a campervan hire from Milan.

What extra costs are involved in auto transport beyond fuel. Is parking expensive or will small villages many times be at no cost? Are there many toll roads in CH? Is there a special pass to drive there? We like the extra flexibility of the auto but would also require a travel pass for mountain trains or cable cars. Which one?

What are your thoughts about this trip train, car or campervan? When considering the costs of all three they are all within budget. Which would you recommend? Thank you in advance!
