Transport from Stechelberg to Lauterbrunnen

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a visit to Schilthorn and needs to return to Lauterbrunnen via Stechelberg. They are looking for transport options from Stechelberg to Lauterbrunnen and any better routes for their return trip. They also want to know the name of the Stechelberg bottom station.

Key takeaways:
  • Buses from Stechelberg LSMS to Lauterbrunnen run at 14:12 and then every half hour until 17:12, taking about 13 minutes.
  • You can also take the cable car to Mürren, then walk to the train station and take a train to Grutschalp, which connects to a funicular to Lauterbrunnen, with a total journey of about 21 minutes.
  • Consider visiting Trümmelbach Falls en route if you have time, but be mindful of bus schedules to avoid long waits.
  • Mürren is a charming village with cafes and shops, so it's worth the visit compared to Stechelberg, which has fewer attractions.

the ground station is called Stechelberg LSMS. Buses leave at 14.12 then half=hourly till 17.12 and hourly after that. The journey to Lauterbrunnen takes about 13 minutes. It is also possible to get off cablecar at Murren, walk through the village to the train station where you catch train to Grutschalp which connects with a funicular down to Lauterbrunnen. The train leaves Murren at 14.36 and half-hourly. total journey time about 21 minutes. Hope this helps. Can recommend either route – Murren is a pretty village with some nice little cafes and souvenir shops and lovely views of the Jungfrau range. There is less to see at Stechelberg though there is a café there and you will see waterfalls along the bus route. Depending on how much time you have, you could also get off bus to visit Trummelbach Falls (famous waterfalls down through the mountain) and then resume bus journey to Lauterbrunnen. Just keep eye on time as you don’t want to just miss a bus and wait long time for next one (or you can walk along a pleasant path to Lauterbrunnen!).
