Travel from Geneva to Jungfrau region with kids

Short summary – read this first

Awam Ahmed is planning a 2.5-day trip to Switzerland with his family of five, focusing on travel from Geneva to the Jungfrau region. He is looking for affordable travel options and specific advice on tickets and routes for visiting the mountains.

Key takeaways:
  • Consider getting the Swiss Travel Pass for discounts on mountain transport, especially since children under 16 can travel for free with a Family Card.
  • If looking for a one-day option, check the Saver Day Pass for cost-effective travel from Geneva to the Jungfrau region.
  • You can buy connecting tickets to Jungfraujoch online or at train stations; plan to take the earliest train for a full day trip.
  • Reservations aren't usually necessary on Swiss trains, but consider them during high season for Jungfraujoch.
  • Double-check the number of Junior Travel Cards needed for your kids to save on costs.

Hi Awam ahmed and welcome to MySwissAlps.com!

What are your plans in the Jungfrau region? Are you visiting the mountains? Or do you just travel there?

If you are visiting mountains, I recommend the Swiss Travel Pass so you get discounts on mountain transport as well. See the validity map here: http://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpass/validity.

For your kids, under 16 years old, you can get the Swiss Family Card for free if you buy the Swiss Travel Pass for yourself. With the Swiss Family Card they can travel for free. For your kid, who is older than 16, you should also get the Swiss Travel Pass as he/she counts already as an adult.

Thank you for your help but It is quite expensive. Any other option can we get as we would be traveling for just one day. And yes we are going there to see mountains

    Hi there,

the Swiss Travel Pass gives you usually 50% discount the mountain transport + kids travel for free under the age of 16, this is why I recommend it.

If you are looking for a rail pass just for the Geneva – Jungfrau region and back, have a look at the Saver Day Pass: http://www.myswissalps.com/saverdaypass. Note, that they can run out and if you buy them earlier usually they are cheaper. See the current prices here: http://www.myswissalps.com/saverdaypass/price.

For your kids under 16, you can get the Junior Travel Card (for 30 CHF each): http://www.myswissalps.com/juniortravelcard, with this card they travel for free for 30 days. See the validity map here: http://www.myswissalps.com/juniortravelcard/validity.

You have one more option, the SuperSaver Ticket, but they are not flexible, if you miss the train you lose the ticket: http://www.myswissalps.com/traintickets/switzerland. They can run out and also there aren’t Super Saver tickets for all the routes.

To make sure which option is best for you, you should compare the costs. You can do this with the help of our calculation spreadsheet: http://www.myswissalps.com/train/ticketspasses/practical/chooserailpass.

I hope this helps you a bit more,

    Hi Awam Ahmed,

For the trip to Jungfraujoch with the Saver Day Pass, you get free travelling up to Wengen or Grindelwald. From Wengen or Grindelwald to Jungfraujoch, you will a connecting ticket at full fare price. Children with Junior Travelcards travel for free. Details on how to reach Jungfraujoch are available here: http://www.myswissalps.com/jungfraujoch/gettingthere. You can purchase the connecting tickets at any train station or online here.

According to the timetable, the last train leaving Jungfraujoch is at 5.47 pm. If you are planning this as a day trip from Geneva, I suggest taking the earliest train out as the journey from Geneva to Jungfraujoch takes about 4.5 hours (the cogwheel ride up from Grindelwald/Wengen to Jungfraujoch makes upabout 1.5 hour of the total journey). So be sure to plan your departures and arrivals carefully. You can use the timetable to check train schedules plan your journeys.

Let us know if you need more info.

    Regards,

    Anna

    Hi Awam_ahmed,

A small addition: you only need 2 Junior Travelcards, so that’s CHF 60 instead of CHF 90: http://www.myswissalps.com/juniortravelcard/price.

Saver Day Pass fares vary. I don’t know what your travel date is. The CHF 78 you’ve seen can be right, but make sure to check for your specific travel date and note that the price you’re seeing only counts if you buy those passes now. More price information and purchase options can be found at https://www.myswissalps.com/saverdaypass/price.

Reservations are not necessary for most Swiss trains: https://www.myswissalps.com/train/reservations. If you plan to visit Jungfraujoch in August (which is still high season) you could consider making seat reservations, but it’s not required. You can read about pricing and purchase options here: https://www.myswissalps.com/jungfraujoch/tickets.
