Travel over the Splügen pass

Short summary – read this first

GordonT is planning to travel over the Splügen pass around September 22. He is concerned about possible weather conditions affecting his trip, as the pass usually closes in October. He seeks advice on whether he can expect to navigate the pass safely during this time.

Key takeaways:
  • Check the weather forecast close to your travel date, as snowfall can lead to early pass closures.
  • Have an alternative route ready, like motorway A13, in case of unexpected weather changes.
  • Enjoy your trip and be prepared for possible weather challenges.

Greetings, I am looking forward to travel the Splügen pass on or about 22 Sept 2019. I will be traveling north coming from Italy. From what I’ve seen the pass will close in October but I have some concerns that conditions might be too questionable in mid-September. Can you please advise and offer any additional advice regarding the Splügen pass. Thank you for your help. I’m looking forward to my return to Switzerland.

Hello GordonT and welcome to MySwissAlps!

It is not possible to tell if unexpected snowfall on or about Sept. 22 will provoke an early closing of the Splügen pass. Such closing is “unlikely but possible”. I know this doesn’t help you but there is no better answer.

    Hi Gordon,

Snowman is right, so all I can add is that there are alternative routes if necessary (1% chance I’d say): motorway A13 for example (San Bernardino).
