Traveling from Luzern to Como w/ Swiss Travel Pass

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named Margaret is planning a trip with her family of 5 from Luzern to Como, Italy, on July 4th. She wants advice on the fastest and most direct train routes, as well as whether she needs to buy additional tickets for the Italian segment after using the Swiss Travel Pass. The goal is to make their long travel day more enjoyable.

Key takeaways:
  • Use the IR train from Luzern to Arth-Goldau for a direct route to Como, as it makes more sense for your journey.
  • You will need to buy a separate ticket for the train from Chiasso to Como since the Swiss Travel Pass only covers travel within Switzerland.
  • It's not necessary to reserve seats on Swiss trains; feel free to check the occupancy rate for a better idea of seat availability.

On July 4th, 2019 my family of 5 will be traveling from Luzern to Como, Italy. We are wanting to travel the fastest most direct route, due to a long travel day once in Italy. What are the recommended trains/route that is the most direct but also pleasurable? I see there is an option to take an IR train to Arth-Goldau then on to Como or Urban train that stops at Rotkreaz then on to Como? Is either a better experience or about the same? My second question is we will have the Swiss Travel Pass for the Switzerland part of the train ride, but do I need to buy Italian train tickets for the later part of ride into Como? What leg do I need to get the tickets for? Any help would be appreciated.

    Hello Margaret,

The SBB Timetable (bit.ly/2HH1U7B) will show you the most direct route which will take you via the 57km Gotthard Base Tunnel. It doesn’t matter much which route you take but the IR connection makes more sense I think.

The Swiss Travel Pass covers you up to the border at Chiasso. You will need an Italian ticket from there to Como.

You can book the whole trip using the SBB timetable and claim a reduction for the Swiss leg by nominating “GA 2.cl” which is the Swiss domestic equivalent of the Swiss Travel Pass. See also http://www.myswissalps.com/tr aintickets/italy and attached.

Thanks so much for the helpful info. I will plan on getting tickets from Chiasso to Como. One other question I meant to ask, is it recommended to get seat reservations for the Swiss leg on the regional train? I know most trains you don’t need seat reservations with Swiss Travel Pass. Thanks

    Hello Barrmargaret,

No, it is not necessary to reserve seats in Swiss trains. You can, but there is normally no need to.

When you check your connection using the timetable, you will find “occupancy rate” symbolised with little figures to help you get an idea of how full the train might be.

    Hope this answers your question.

Happy journey and get back to us for further input.
