5-day Swiss trip based Amden, St. Gallen: best rail pas and excursions

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a 5-day trip to Amden, St. Gallen, at the end of July with two groups of teens and adults. They need advice on the best train pass for sightseeing and ask if their itinerary, which includes Santis Mountain, Seerenbach Waterfalls, and St. Cathedral Church, should be adjusted to fit their schedule better.

Key takeaways:
  • Consider getting the Swiss Travel Pass for convenience as it allows for easy travel on trains, buses, and boats.
  • Research travel times using the Swiss timetable to better plan your day trips.
  • If you opt for the Swiss Half Fare Card, apply for the Swiss Family Card so the 14-year-old can travel for free.
  • Don't forget to evaluate travel options based on your chosen activities to make the most of your time.

    Hi TTrich,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

Thanks for sharing your travel plans.  That’s so nice you will be staying in Amden, however traveling to your wish list of destinations will require quite long commutes.  I suggest that you research some travel times using the Swiss timetable so you have an idea of the travel times for you and your group.

    Here’s the Swiss timetable link.

If your plans remain as above, it could be that  a Swiss Half Fare Card each plus the respective discounted tickets could be an option or for convenience, the Swiss Travel Pass when you can simplynhop on and off many trains, boats, buses is another option.  If you want to be sure, it’s best to carry out the maths.  Members of our forum, often use our “How to choose a Swiss rail pass” guide to carry out the calculations.  Based on daily activities, thereon the best rail pass is displayed. There is a downloadable spreadsheet you can use for the maths.

Please note, the 14 year old, if you go ahead with the Swiss Half Fare Card or the Swiss Travel Pass, the parents  can apply for the Swiss Family Card so he/she can travel for free.  The 16 and 17 year olds would opt with a Swiss Travel Pass Youth.

    All the necessary links here.

To keep things tidy, I’ll remove your other thread that you also posted as I have answered your questions in this reply.

Whilst in Zurich, you can find additional ideas for things to see and do in our Zurich travel guide.

    Kind regards,
    Yolanda
