Traveling to Switzerland in December worth it?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named Aartidesaai is planning a trip to Switzerland with two adults and a 13-year-old in the first week of December. They are unsure if traveling during this time is worthwhile due to concerns about cold weather, limited daylight, and closure of mountain routes. They seek honest opinions from those who have visited in December.

Key takeaways:
  • Expect shorter daylight hours in December, with darkness by 5 pm.
  • While greenery is minimal, snowcapped mountains and Christmas markets offer a unique charm.
  • Most cable cars remain open; check ahead for operating dates to avoid disappointment.
  • Consider winter activities like snowshoeing and sledging if you encounter snow.

Hi, we are planning to travel Switzerland in first week of December we are three people two adults and 13 year old. My friends suggested me December is not the best time to visit Switzerland and it will be waste of time and money. reason being I can’t see greenery around, daytime is less so I will have only few hours for sightseeing also it will be extremely cold and many of the routes will be closed ( mountain area) due to heavy snowfall can you please let me know if all mentioned about is correct and should I avoid traveling in December.

if anyone has traveled in December kindly let me know your experience I really need honest opinion on the same thank you.

Hi Aartidesaai and welcome to MySwissAlps.com!

True, that there can be snowfall in December and the daylight is short (it gets dark around 5 pm). You won’t see greenery but you have a good chance to see snowcapped mountains which look amazing in my opinion. Also from the middle of December there are the traditional chrismtas markets in the bigger towns.

You can read about the months and weather here: http://www.myswissalps.com/besttimetovisit and http://www.myswissalps.com/weather.

Some cable cars may be closed in the beginning of December as they are preparing for the ski season, but the most famous ones any many others (like Jungfraujoch, Klein Matterhorn, Gornergrat etc.) will be open for sure. You can look for the operating dates in advance to avoid disappointments.

If there is snow – you can try snowshoeing or sledging: http://www.myswissalps.com/activities/winter/nonski and http://www.myswissalps.com/activities/winter/snow.

At http://www.myswissalps.com/plantrip/clothing/winter you can read about the proper winter clothing.

I think that winter in Switzerland can be magical – but surely it is different from the summer months.

I totally understand you, let us know if you have questions regarding your summer holiday!

In my opinion, the best month to visit Switzerland is September when the heat is over and there are also fewer tourists.
