Travelling from Montreux to Glacier 3000

Short summary – read this first

Prasun09 is planning a trip to Glacier 3000 from Montreux on October 19 and is curious about the best way to get there, including any cable cars. They also want to know if visiting Gruyeres in the evening is feasible after spending a couple of hours at Glacier 3000.

Key takeaways:

Take the Golden Pass train to Gstaad, then a bus to Col du Pillon for the cable car to Glacier 3000; this journey takes about 2.5 hours. Alternatively, for a faster option, take a train to Aigle, then another train to Les Diablerets, followed by a bus to Col du Pillon. It is possible to visit Gruyeres after Glacier 3000 in one day; just plan your itinerary carefully using the SBB timetable. When traveling on the GoldenPass train, seat reservations are not required except for VIP and Prestige classes, so you can sit without a reservation in standard seating.

    Hi Prasun09,

You have 2 options to get to Glacier 3000 from Montreux train station.

1st option – Take the Golden Pass train to Gstaad, the switch to the bus to Col du Pillon, where the cable car base station is. Then take the cable car up. The whole journey takes about 2.5 hours and travels on the scenic Golden Pass route.

2nd option – Take a regular train to Aigle, then switch train for Les Diablerets. Then take a bus to Col du Pillon, followed by the cable car to Glacier 3000. This connection is faster (1.5 hours).

It is possible to combine your trip to Glacier 3000 with a trip to Gruyeres in one day. You can find information on how to reach Gruyeres from Montreux here: http://www.myswissalps.com/gruyeres/gettingthere. I suggest start your day early and use the SBB timetable to plan your journey.

    Hope this helps.

    regards,

    Anna

    Hi Prasun09,

Seat reservations are generally not required on the GoldenPass trains. Reservations are only compulsory if you are wanting to sit in the VIP seating or Prestige class. All information in the below link:

    I have read the link.

In the later portion of the link it says reservation required for 1st and 2nd class for Montreux to interlaken which cost 20chf. Prestige class has 35chf. No standing option in golden pass train.

Is there 3rd class or normal options where reservation not required ?

    Hi Prasun09,

There is no 3rd class. The advice is that reservations are recommended in 1st and 2nd class. This is a general advice. It is not compulsory to make a reservation.

As you will be traveling in October, I think you should be fine as the busy sumner period will be over.

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda
