Short summary – read this first

A traveler plans to take a Christmas Market river boat cruise ending in Basel on December 18th. They found a package with hotel stays for an eleven-day trip costing over $4,000 per person and are asking if this is a reasonable price or if there are better options with provided itineraries. The advice offered includes various resources to compare costs and itineraries.

Key takeaways:
  • Consider comparing your package costs with DIY options using sample itineraries and accommodation links from travel forums.
  • Look into the details of what the package includes, such as hotel comfort, meals, and excursions, as they can greatly affect pricing.
  • Use the free Plan + Package service to create a customized itinerary and get an estimated budget for your travel expenses.

We are taking a Christmas Market river boat cruise this December that ends in Basel on December 18th. I found a company called “Vacations by Rail” that includes hotel stays for an eleven day trip. They give you an itinerary to follow along with the rail pass but the cost is over $4,000 per person. My question, is this about right or is there better options out there to give us an itinerary to follow along with places to stay? Any suggestions would be very appreciated!!

    Hi MSExplorers,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

Thanks for sharing your travel plans and that’s lovely you will be enjoying some Christmas markets through Europe this December.

With regard to the pricing for the package you have found.  The only way is to carry out the maths and compare.

It’s very personal whether to opt with a package or to organise the trip yourself.  Some travellers enjoy researching and making their own arrangements, however some prefer a package with everything booked for them.  It relieves them of the research and booking. No doubt  there is an administrative fee incurred with such packages.

Perhaps, take a look at the itineraries section in our planning section.  There are some sample itineraries you could easily follow.  Then, we have the accommodation section so you can research hotels for each base and last but not least, the rail pass guide where you can research pricing of the rail passes.

    Here are the links:

You can probably quickly get a few numbers together and compare.

I hope this gets you started.

    Kind regards,
    Yolanda

    Hi MSExplorers,

Yolanda has provided you with perfect resources to compare your options!

As for the quote of the package you were offered: whether that’s reasonable, depends on what exactly the package includes. The hotel comfort category and travel class (1st or 2nd) can make a big difference, for example. And would meals be included, as well as day trips?

You might want to use our free Plan + Package service: https://www.myswissalps.com/planning/itineraries/itinerary-service/. If you let us know what you want, we’ll make a personalized itinerary for you and our partner turns this into one easy package. When filling out the request form, you’ll also see an estimated budget. That estimation includes travel, hotels with breakfast, and day trips. It excludes other meals.

Let us know if you have further questions about this, we’re happy to help!
