Trip to Gruyères cheese factory and Maison Cailler chocolate factory

Short summary – read this first

Susan and her husband are planning a day trip to the Gruyères Cheese Factory and Maison Cailler Chocolate Factory from Montreux towards the end of May 2024. They are looking for advice on transportation, the best time to visit for the cheese-making process, and whether they should book lunch in advance.

Key takeaways:
  • Take a direct train from Montreux to Gruyères/Broc without transferring at Montbovon.
  • Arrive at Gruyères early, ideally before noon, to see the cheese-making process.
  • Consider using the Swiss Travel Pass for convenient transport options on your trip.
  • It’s advisable to check restaurant availability ahead of time to avoid long waits.

My husband and I are planning on a day trip to Gruyères Cheese Factory and Maison Cailler Chocolate factory from Montreux, most likely around end of May 2024 and would appreciate any help with this. (We do not plan to take the Chocolate train).

    1) Is there a direct train from Montreux to Gruyères/Broc, or is it through Montbovon to either of those locations?

    2) What is the best time to arrive at Gruyeres to see the cheese making process? i.e anytime during their open hours or better to start around their opening hours.

    3) Which is better to go first: Gruyères or Cailler?

    4) If Gruyères first, is it best to go by bus or train to Cailler or, if Cailler first, what is the best way to go to Gruyères?

    5) Do we have to book a restaurant at Gruyères in advance for lunch, or easy to find restaurants?

    6) Any other tips for this trip would be appreciated.

    Thank you so much,

    Susan

    Hi susangeorge9,

You can find useful information and tips on how to reach Gruyères from Montreux here: https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/la-maison-du-gruyere/

It’s possible to combine the trip to Gruyères and Broc in one day: https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/maison-cailler/

I recommend getting to Gruyères early before noon to see the cheese-making show.

    Regards,

    Anna

    Hi Susan,

In the ‘cheese’ link that Anna provided, if you scroll to “Other websites of interest’, you’ll find some useful links.  Here you can research the Cheese making timetable.

    Enjoy your time there.

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda

    Appreciate the information, Yolanda.

Is this a trip that we can plan/do on our own without much hiccups, or is it better to go through a tour company?

Some of the reviews were not too encouraging, that is why I thought we could do on our own but want to be sure. 🙂

    Thanks again for your input.

    Hi Susan,

It’s very personal, some prefer a tour, some have a preference to carry out the trip independently.

Given the efficient transport system here, I think it’s all very doable independently.  Both are located very close to the their respective train stations.

Just use the Swiss timetable so you can plan your day out 🙂

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda
