Is the Umbrail Pass open by May 10?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is wondering if the Umbrail Pass will be open by 10 May and asks about the driving time from Santa Maria Val Müstair to the top of the pass or the Italian border. Based on past years, it's likely to be closed until at least 20 May, which means they might need to adjust their plans.

Key takeaways:
  • Expect the Umbrail Pass to likely remain closed until 20 May based on historical data.
  • If you want to drive through high passes, consider planning your trip for July, August, or September when openings are more reliable.

Can anyone please tell me – is the Umbrail Pass likely to be open by 10 May? And what is the approximate driving time from Santa Maria Val Müstair to the top of the pass (or to the Italian border)?

    >> Can anyone please tell me – is the Umbrail Pass likely to be open by 10 May?

It’s very unlikely. In the past 18 years, the earliest it has ever opened is 20 May (that was last year), and in 13 of those years, it was not before 25 May.

Thanks so much … guess we’ll have to plan to come later another year. What about the Albula Pass? We were hoping to stay there on 9 May …

Pretty unlikely. In the last 18 years, it has been open by 9 May in only two years (2007 and 2011). Last year it opened on 14 May.

Trains can get you through when the highways are blocked

Thanks – but we’ll be travelling by car – the whole point was to drive the pass.

    Hi Roberta,

Perhaps you can switch to the scenic train routes this time and come back another year in July, August and September. Any other season is risky for the higher road passes (see the list of passes on myswissalps.com/car/tr afficinfo).

    Enjoy your trip(s)!
