Using Swiss Travel Pass as a group

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning to buy 5 Swiss Travel Passes for their family and wants to maximize credit card miles. They need clarity on whether each family member must show their individual passes to the train conductor or if they can consolidate the passes for easier handling during travel.

Key takeaways:
  • Each family member needs to hold their own Swiss Travel Pass since each pass has its own QR code.
  • It's advisable to print out the QR codes for each pass or download them on smartphones for easy access.
  • Managing individual passes may be complicated, so having everyone hold their own will ensure smoother travel, especially when seats are not together.

Ok, this might be a strange question to ask but here goes!

I will be buying 5 x 15-day swiss travel passes for my family. Thing is, I am trying to maximize credit card miles accrual on my spend, so I am considering to use break it into 2 transactions, with 2 and 3 passes respectively in each booking. There would be no issues doing this in normal circumstances, but I would prefer to not let the elderly in my group fumble with their devices when the train conductor comes around, or when visiting attractions.

Herein lies my question as to how the swiss travel pass works: If i am travelling in a group of 5, does each member have to show their individual pass (QR code i presume?) to the staff? Or can I “consolidate” different passes into one account (from different bookings) which the train conductor can check together at once?

    Hi forwardhero,

When you purchase the Swiss Travel Pass online, you will receive an email with your pass as a PDF file. You may also receive a link which allows you to add the pass to a wallet app on your smartphone.

If you are travelling as a group and buying the Swiss Travel Pass together, I suggest you print out the PDF files for each group member (make sure the QR codes are visible) and also send the link to each group member to download the pass on their smartphone (if possible).

Normal practice is to show your validity individually in person. In the days of paper tickets one person could have a handful of tickets and show them all to the conductor at once. You can replicate this by handing all the ‘devices’ to one person, but that is quite complicated handling! As Anna says, the way to replicate the ‘old days’ is to print out your passes onto pieces of paper

Ah i see. So there’s no common “wallet” or singular QR code for all 5 pax since each individual will have his own QR code. I will print them out as advised. Or perhaps I can take a screenshot of all the 5 QR codes and swipe it on my phone for the conductor! Thank you Anna and 1960man!

    Hi forwardhero,

That’s right, each ticket/pass has its own QR code (so basically 1 person 1 QR code).

It’s more convenient to have each person hold their own pass (either digital or printout) just in case you can’t be seated together when the trains are running at high capacity.

    Regards,

    Anna
