WC availability on Swiss trains and rail stations

Short summary – read this first

Samir is planning a trip and wants to know if WC facilities are available on all trains and stations for 2nd class travelers, and if there's a fee for Swiss Travel Pass holders. He is particularly interested in understanding the availability and cost of toilet access during his travels.

Key takeaways:
  • WC facilities on most medium to long-distance trains are free to use for all passengers.
  • Many larger stations have toilet facilities that require a fee, typically around one to two Swiss francs.
  • Smaller stations often have free WC facilities, but fees may be introduced in the future.
  • Always check if shorter rail lines have WC access onboard, as some may not provide this service.

    Hello Samir,

There are WC / toilet facilities on most medium to long distance trains, both in 1st and 2nd class sections. These are free of charge to use.

WC / toilet facilities located at railway stations require a fee, normally around one to two swiss francs.

    Best wishes,

    Yolanda

We used WC only in trains and attractions. They were free and very clean. We travelled in Second Class

Actually, many of the smaller Swiss stations, and a good few larger town and junction stations, still have WC facilities which are free to use, though I suspect as improvement programmes roll out, fees may become more widespread. As tested profusely in September 2022! As Schroffchetan advises, they are almost always scrupulously clean.

Some of the minor railways, especially shorter narrow gauge lines and urban lines, do not have a WC on board, though there always seems to be a facility at the first and last station os a branch line.

    Thank you John,

That’s good to know. Our experience is that paid toilets at most Swiss rail stations are the norm but I think you are right, in time, all will require a fee.

    Best wishes,

    Yolanda

To be honest we travelled 5 of us on very tight budget. My parents are senior citizen and need to use toilets frequently due to life style diseases.

This was perfectly legal way to use WC when on train / attractions

I agree this was penny pinching tip but had no options

    Cheers

    Chetan
