Weather and hiking in June in Jungfrau region

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named Shamik is planning a family trip to Switzerland in mid-June, after having visited in September when the weather was sunny. They are concerned about potential rain and whether easy hikes at moderate altitudes will be snow-free during this time.

Key takeaways:
  • Rain in June is likely to be intermittent rather than all-day showers, so checking a reliable weather app like MeteoSwiss daily is advisable.
  • Moderate altitude hikes like Mannlichen to Kleine Scheidegg and Grutschalp to Murren are likely to be snow-free in June, but it's best to confirm route conditions closer to your trip.
  • If heavy rain occurs, consider visiting museums which may be free with a Swiss Travel Pass, and plan to combine this with other activities like boat rides.

    Hi all,

Thanks for maintaining this wonderful site!

We (family of three) are planning a trip to Switzerland this year. We have travelled to Switzerland before in Sep and had beautiful weather – lots of sunshine with very little rain. This time, we are planning to go in the middle of June. I have read weather reports and it seems June is the month with maximum rainfall. Since our main objectives will be easy hikes in the mountains, I have two questions:

    1. When it does rain, is it the whole day? Or is it in short bursts? (I am aware it is hard to generalize, but still want some pointers).

    2. For hikes in moderate altitude, will they be snow free? E.g., : Mannlichen to Kleine Scheidegg , Grutschalp to Murren and hikes around Grindelwald First area (easy ones).

    Thanks in advance.

    Regards

    Shamik

    Hi Shamik,

it is truly difficult to predict the weather exactly, but it will be probably more rain in June than you have had in September.

Weather in Switzerland can change in a minute – sometimes not even according to the forecasts. But even if it says rain for the day, it does not necessarily mean that it will rain all day long. I like the app of MeteoSwiss, it has great animation for clouds too (also for rain and temperature). I always check it in the early morning, if I am planning to go on a mountain trip.

It’s worth checking the webcams on the mountains. And if it is really raining that bad, you could visit a museum (it is not the best area for museums, but there are still some – maybe you can connect it with a boat ride on Lake Thun (http://www.myswissalps.com/boatlakethun) or Brienz (http://www.myswissalps.com/boatlakebrienz). In case you have a Swiss Travel Pass they are for free as well as many museums, you can get the list of them here: http://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpass/details.

Regarding the hikes, high altitude hikes will be open just in June-July, but I am sure you’ll be able to find open routes in June too. It is better to look for the route conditions if you get closer to your traveling dates. You can check them here: http://www.jungfrau.ch/en-gb/summer-sport/hiking/

On several previous hiking trips to Switzerland, I have been fortunate to enjoy great weather the last two weeks of June, and I actually prefer that time of year. We had maybe one or two rainy days or part of a day (thunderstorms can move through quickly) so I hope that you experience the same beautiful weather that I have in the past. I’ve done all of the hikes that you asked about during that time of year and have never encountered snow on those particular hiking paths. Wishing you a fabulous trip!
